Alan Cottrill Sculpture Studio & Gallery image
The bronze sculptures outside are only a small sample of what you'll see inside. The first floor is mostly workshop with works in progress and displays all the steps in building a bronze statue. The employee we met was very knowledgeable and carefully explained every step in their modeling and casting process. The second floor holds hundreds of statues and is absolutely amazing. Anyone interested in sculpture and/ or art student absolutely must go here. See more..

    - Prettiest Catholic Church in the area
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Universities & Schools • Architectural Buildings • Churches & Cathedrals
    St. Nicholas Catholic Church image
I drop in for the late Mass from time to time. My children love it and consider it a special treat to go to St. Nicholas. The music is organ and cantor. The current priest can preach a cogent homily. The real highlight of St. Nicholas is the interior of the church. If you go to Mass, you kind of know what you are getting but the surroundings can vary radically in this area. The interior of St. Nicholas is unmatched in the nearby counties. A word for visitors, most of the parking is on a slope. See more..

  9. 5.0 Seilers' Studio and Gallery (1 review)
    - Wonderful Gallery
Sunday: Spent 1-2 hours Art Galleries
    Seilers' Studio and Gallery image
Seilers' Studio and Gallery is home to the artwork of Michael and Kathleen Seiler painter and poet respectively. Unusual contemporary works in asphalt and alkyds coupled with poetry creates a beautiful array of museum quality works. Artwork is both in the process of being made as well as being displayed. These works were created in a traditional manner, using wood stretchers with heavly gessoed canvas, however that is where traditional ends. I have chosen asphalt because asphalt’s nature is labile, and has the potential for unexpected change. So life, ever changing, brings both good and ill. Asphalt, smooth and shiny, also reflects the colors of its surroundings. We likewise, in our personal journey, reflect the “colors” of our experiences. The alkyds lend some chemical changes and instability to the work. On occasion, color is added to signify some emotional element, demonstrating the very nature of redemption in a particular situation. See more..

  11. 5.0 Stone Academy (1 review)
    - An Important Link in the Underground Railroad
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
This 1808 house was built before this area was linked with Zanesville across the river at the time. Ohio Anti-Slavery Society conventions were held here in the 1830's, and the enmity by the pro-slavery people in Zanesville almost caused the death of the owner and the burning of the building. It became an important link in the Underground Railroad with a hiding place under the house for runaway slaves, who were assisted in their escape to Canada and their freedom. The guided tour was excellent. I also suggest that you include a visit to the nearby Dr. Increase Matthews House, which can be visited with a combination ticket. See more..
  12. 4.5 Zanesville Museum of Art (69 reviews)
    - Hidden gem
Sunday: Spent 1-2 hours Art Museums
    Zanesville Museum of Art image
This is not the easiest place to find in Zanesville. Look for the red metal sculpture in the yard. Otherwise, it could easily pass for a church building. Admission is graciously funded by an area bank, so it's free. There are 3 floors of exhibits. I expected the collection to largely focus on ceramics, since the area is known for ceramic production. In actuality, there are probably more paintings than anything else, most of which are portraits. A couple final thoughts, it's not cluttered or disorganized. They have an excellent library. My kids enjoyed it. And there is nothing truly distasteful on display here (if you're looking for edgy modern art, this is not the place to find it). See more..

Made the short trip down from Dillon State Park for ice cream since the camp store was closed, and you can’t go camping without ice cream! So glad we came as we’ll now return often. Got burgers in addition to the ice cream, both were excellent. Love the sauce on the burgers. Huge portions of ice cream, two scoops was huge! Enjoyed the COVID friendly outdoor seating, which filled up fast. Great service. We will definitely be back. See more..

    - Rare & historic design

    Y Bridge image
This bridge's design is intriguing and I wish the city designated parking areas for people who want to walk on it. We found unofficial places to pull in close to the east and west ends of the Y, the former next to the falls. FYI, the Pottery in Place was not in place on the west end. See more..

  23. 4.0 Lock and Dam No. 10 (6 reviews)
    - Unusual gate valves but no viewing bridge, double lock
State Parks • Points of Interest & Landmarks
Lock and Dam #10 is a vintage double-chambered lock on the Muskingum Water Trail. Land access through alley at approx 800 Hughes. Locks are about one mile south of dam on diversion channel. Unusual "gate valves" permit viewing of water flows. Both valves and gates are manually operated. Great photo opportunities for enthusiasts. No viewing bridge. Boats transit at irregular times. Hazard for injury to the inattentive. Not a land destination for scout or home schooling groups; these groups should arrange to lock through by boat. Because of the gate valves you will see most of the operation. Before entering the area by land, request permission of lock master. For your safety, expect to be told exactly where to stand.
