My husband retired from the coal industry after 35 years of service. He’s been describing these machines to me for years. This is an amazing sight! I never imagined the magnitude. When you’re in the control room, which is five stories up, and Big Brutus is sixteen stories tall, you realize what an engineering marvel it was. And, there were only three people operating it. As he described the choreography of a good operator, timing how to swing the bucket back and forth, scooping up and dumping without a break in movement, I could see the talent required to make this behemoth perform. Definitely take the opportunity to climb up inside Big Brutus. The museum is interesting and has a lot of information about the history of mining in the area. As an aside, much of the area that was mined is now preserved for wildlife and fishing. There is a small RV park onsite that serves campers who visit these areas. See more..
