    Carey's Bar image
Established in 1954, Carey's has been my favorite social bar since 1989. It's classic decor (with a trophy elk headmount smoking a cigarette towering over the taproom), is quite visual, adding atmosphere to a friendly meeting place where laughter abounds, both inside and in the spacious outdoor area where local musicians play Friday evenings during warm weather. With over a dozen tap beers, there is a favorite for everyone. Bartender TJ makes a fine martini as well. As a University town bar, foodstuffs are snacks such as pickled eggs (which adds zest to shots of Jagermeister), or call for a delivery from R-Pizza (also a classic place). After Carey's, a dozen other watering-holes nearby await you. See more..

The Coyote Twin is a non-profit community run cinema located in downtown Vermillion, SD. The theater has been a keystone of Vermillion life and culture for decades. In July 2015, a group of local citizens purchased the theater in order to prevent it from closing. Since the purchase, over $200,000 in donation have led to improvements in both theaters. They have been updated with digital projection, state of the art sound, new screens. rocker back chairs and new lighting. Come check out why the Coyote Twin is the best cinema experience in southeastern South Dakota. See more..

    - Great views of the surrounding area
    Historic Sites
    Spirit Mound image
We had an easy walk along the 8/10 mile path (about 18 minutes each way), and welcomed the good signage and explanations of what we were seeing and the ties to Lewis and Clark. We ascended the hill at the end of August, almost exactly the same day they did. Before going up, there is a pit toilet in the parking lot. Signs warm you that there is no shade or water—wear a hot and carry a water bottle. See more..

    W.H. Over Museum image
I was surprised that this museum was not listed. It is a must see place when you are in the area. The museum was set up by W.H. Over, a self educated archeologist / scientist. It shows a large variety items collected by Dr. Over end 19th/early 20th century (including minerals, fossils, archaeological and biological items). It is a unique collection you will not find anywhere else. The displays are authentic. They invite you to view them in detail. The other exhibitions in the museum deal with a variety of subjects: e.g. native Americans in the area, Lewis & Clark (Spirit Mound), life in and development of this part of South Dakota. There was even a special exhibition showing the history of Kodak photography cameras. The staff was very friendly and available to answer any question I had. See more..
