   While visiting family in Iowa we stopped at all the Freedom Rocks that were on our route. The rocks are painted by Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II and are absolutely amazing and have a tie with the local community. The north side portrays the only Aircraft Carrier sunk by enemy gunfire during WWII. The USS Gambier was sunk during the battle of Leyte Gulf. The south side portrays the tomb of the unknown soldier. The east side portrays Colonel, Congressman, Senator and Vice President Richard Johnson who shot and killed Chief Tecumseh in the War of 1812. The west face depicts the brothers Lester and Paul Pavel who were both B-24 pilots that were killed in WWII. The mortar men at the bottom are also Iowa natives. See more..

   My wife and I were visiting our out-doorsy hiking type son who lives in North Liberty last week, and he brought us here to hike around the beautiful lake. Unfortunately, there were many large trees and branches across the trails from the recent storms in the area. These were not too difficult to negotiate, and we made about 3.5 miles round trip around the lake. Two pictures of the lake from different spots along the lake perimeter trail are attached.    Cedar Rapids Tank Tours runs a really fun, well organised float down the Cedar River in an agricultural water / feed tank. These are massive, circular plastic tanks that look a lot like an overgrown kiddie pool and have a table, umbrella and bench chairs fixed in them. We got collected in a bus from the Solon Nature and Rec area, halfway between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids and were helped into our tank. We had an awesome afternoon, floating down the river and getting out on sandbars to swim and explore. You can also rent float tubes and be towed along behind the tank. Rick and the team were very friendly & helpful & were around and about in a safety boat to make sure everyone was OK. The float ends at Sutliff Bridge and you get taken back to your car in the bus. It's a really relaxing, super fun way to spend a summer day in Iowa. Definitely recommend it. See more..
