    - Amazing Grounds and Succinct History

Longfellow Evangeline State Historic Site image
A better value than the expensive Rip Van Winkle, Longfellow Evangeline State Historical Site contains exhibits with a history of the Creole and Acadian people. But it was the grounds that amazed the photographer in me. The house is wide open with rooms you can walk into and see period home furnishings. See more..

A mural, wall of names, memorial garden and audio tour await you in the Acadian Memorial, while the history of the Acadian people and their journey toward Cajun identity, including the Acadian Deportation Quilt, make up the Museum. See more..

Lake Fausse Pointe State Park image
We camped here for two nights to do some road bike riding from the park to St. Martinsville and back. The weather was fantastic. It was very relaxing because there was not any good cell/internet service so we got a chance to not be glued to our phones and spend time talking. The office staff was very helpful when checking in and paying for the campsite. There was water everywhere and so were the mosquitoes. Be aware that Barred Owls are very loud owls at night. They let you know you are in the woods. The showering facility was convenient. See more..

  6. 4.0 Evangeline Monument (24 reviews)
    - Only go here if you know the story or are interested in history.
    Monuments & Statues
    Evangeline Monument image
This is a very interesting stop but only a well read person would understand. The people who make statements like "it's just a statue" do not know the story of the Acadian people. This is the last part of a lesson about the Acadians, not a first stop. Take the time to read Longfellow's Evangeline. It is only about 1500 lines long. Even if you don't ever make it to this area that is a piece of literature that everyone should read. The church beside the monument is also fascinating with a great history of its' own. After doing some pre-reading go on a weekday and plan on spending an hour or two in this area. If you do not pre-read then hire a tour guide. Without knowing what you are looking at you may walk away saying "it's only a statue" or "the tree is closed". See more..
  7. 4.0 Acadian Memorial & Museum (21 reviews)
    - EXCELLENT PLACE TO VISIT

Discover the story of the Acadians who arrived in Louisiana in the 19th century through a historical exhibit and a Memorial which honors all 3,000 who arrived with a mural by Robert Dafford and audio interactive, a Wall of Names, an Eternal Flame and a heritage garden. Don't miss the Acadian quilt. See more..
  8. 4.0 The African American Museum (10 reviews)
    - More Art than History
    Speciality Museums
    The African American Museum image
The attractiveness of this museum is in the artwork that is used to tell the story. The story, while certainly true to its points, does not address a good amount of the negative results of importing a people and forcing them into slave labor. Most of the history is missing. See more..
