  8. 5.0 Woodriff Falls (1 review)
    - Climb the rocks for a close-up view
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
You've probably never seen anything as unique nor perhaps as picturesque as Woodriff Falls. Located eight miles from St. Francisville, Louisiana, a 25-minute drive via Creek Road past Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge, in West Feliciana Parish, Woodriff Falls sits along the Woodriff Ditch near the Mississippi River. One of the most appealing things about these small falls is that the water tumbles down from an overhanging shelf. Over the centuries, as the water has cascaded over the rocky ledge, the evolution and erosion has resulted in the formation of a cave behind the water, allowing visitors to enter a cool area and get a very interesting photograph. In addition, there is a surrounding set of rocks that has formed a shelter that invites visitors to climb them to experience the waterfall close-up. Woodriff Falls is so remote that it rarely is visited, even by locals, but once you arrive and view the picturesque landscape, you know it was worth the trip. See more..
  9. 5.0 The Beast Trail (1 review)
    - A Hidden Gem in West Feliciana
Spent 2-3 hours Biking Trails • Hiking Trails
The Beast is a mountain bike and hiking trail that winds and slinks its way like a ribbon dropped into a small box for about 5 miles around an area of land about a mile in distance. It is in the Tunica hills, but in the very southern part of these hills, so the climbs and descents are much milder. It is beautiful and leafy green in all seasons, with swamps, small hills, be-ferned ravines and views of a sandy bottom creek. In spring, I am surprised only if I don't see any fawns in amongst the dappled light. In summer, no trip is complete without at least one close to close encounter with something slithery. (I tell myself the snake is more scared of me than I of him, but I have been known to lie to myself on occasion.) The trail is behind the baseball fields at the sports complex in Saint Francisville and is not overly used, but has enough use to guarantee that it is well-kept. It's strenuous, but not to the point that even a slow, old heavy runner (like myself) can't trail run at least parts of it. As it twists and winds itself along, you are convinced you are in the deepest woods - and you are - but eventually, you will spot the ball fields and realize you are also only steps away from civilization and despite the distance you have traveled, you are just a short walk to your car. Sign in on the log when you enter and sign in when you leave. It's all free and well-maintained. See more..

  12. 4.5 Oakley Plantation (128 reviews)
    - Soso
    Historic Sites
    Oakley Plantation image
After visiting a couple of other plantations in the area that were totally mind-blowing, I was a little disappointed in this plantation. Not a lot of artifacts in the home and at least one third of the tour guides presentation was about Audubon which only visited the plantation for 4 months. The history the past 200 years should be more important than a 4 month visit even if the person had become famous. See more..

    - Beautiful and peaceful!
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Greenwood Plantation image
My friend and I stayed here while we were on a two week road trip through Texas and Louisiana. I wanted to visit because I had seen the house in the TV mini series "North and South" and fell in love with it; it's even more breathtaking in person! We had the pleasure of meeting both resident cats (yes Minou did try and tell us he was allowed in our room, it was a shame we couldn't let him visit us inside). Julie was a wonderful hostess, she took excellent care of us at breakfast and when we toured the house. Her husband Hal was a character! It was interesting to hear the history of the house which includes it burning to the ground and being completely rebuilt in all its grandeur. In the evening they played Amazing Grace, Star Spangled Banner, and Taps from the main house - what a wonderful moment that was, surrounded by such beauty! 100% recommend visiting this place! Breakfast was in the fridge so we didn't need to rush out for food our first morning. Two of the sweetest ladies came to check on us to see if we needed anything our first morning there. If you're looking for a laid back place this location is perfect for you. We had a blast! See more..

  24. 3.0 Market Hall (6 reviews)
    - Quirky looking, but interesting
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Market Hall image
St. Francisville’s historic Market Hall was constructed in 1819 to provide a farmers market on the ground floor and a magistrate’s office on the upper floor. The result was a rather quirky-looking structure with an upper floor and a ground floor that seem badly mismatched. I do have to admit that the building is architecturally interesting, if not exactly handsome, and I’m glad it was restored in 1984. Today the lower floor of the building is apparently used for craft sales and the like. When our group visited Market Hall on a hot and humid weekday afternoon we found only four or five crafters displaying wares inside. My wife was delighted to find earrings made with Petoskey stones from northern Michigan, but there wasn’t enough variety on display (mostly earrings and specialty soap) to hold interest for very long.
