Square Books is a general independent bookstore in three separate buildings (about 100 feet apart) on the historic town square of Oxford, Mississippi, home of the University of Mississippi and many great writers, including William Faulkner, Barry Hannah, Larry Brown, and, for a time, both Willie Morris and John Grisham. The main store, Square Books, is in a two-story building with a cafe and balcony on the second floor; Off Square Books is a few doors down from the main store and has lifestyle sections such as gardening and cookbooks; and Square Books Jr, the children's bookstore, is in a building on the east side of the square. Our newest store, Rare Square Books, sells rare and collectible books and is above Square Books, Jr. Square Books is known for its strong selection of literary fiction, books on the American South and by Southern writers, a large inventory of reduced-price remainders, and its emphasis on books for children. 2. 5.0 Lyceum-The Circle Historic District (16 reviews)
    - Civil Rights Must See
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Lyceum-The Circle Historic District image
As mentioned in a previous review, this is the oldest building at Ole Miss. This is where James Meredith registered for university in 1962 and is a must see. The statue of Meredith is located just behind the Lyceum and when my wife and I visited from Edmonton, Alberta at the end of January, there quite a few students from different ethnic backgrounds sitting around the commemorative pillars. What a change from the day that Meredith registered and thousands of people rioted in Oxford. (My wife and I are old enough to remember this). The statue is easy to find if you are staying in the downtown area. When you enter the university, there is university employee who will give you directions to the statue and advise you where to park. This is a beautiful university to walk around. See more..

    - Fantastic

Oxford University Stadium At Swayze Field image
Fantastic environment at Swayze. The stadium atmosphere was unbelievable. Better than most professional games and better than any college stadium I have attended. The food was good and there are many concession locations to keep the lines small. The chants by the fans were great and something you can only experience while at the game. The beer showers in right field were a great sight to see live. A must see if you are a college baseball fan. See more..
  7. 5.0 Civil Rights Monument (3 reviews)
    - Honoring the courage of James Meredith
    Monuments & Statues
The Civil Rights Monument, a life-like bronze statue of James Meredith, is located on the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford, behind the historic Lyceum administration building and in front of the J.D. Williams Library. The statue, sculpted by Rod Moorehead, who owned the Southside Gallery in Oxford from 1993 to 1997, was unveiled in 2006, fully 44 years after Meredith became the first African-American to become a student at Ole Miss. It symbolizes the integration of the university in 1962 and honors Meredith and those who fought to give all citizens equal educational opportunities in the South. The statue is engraved with the words: Courage, Knowledge, Opportunity and Perseverance. See more..

  10. 5.0 Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center (1 review)
    - Unique Venue for Watching College Tennis
    Spent 2-3 hours Sports Complexes
    Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center image
I visited the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center for the women's tennis match between Ole Miss and the University of South Carolina. It is quite different from most college tennis venues and gives the spectator a number of different viewing options. Most college tennis facilities have 6 or 12 courts with stadium seating behind the courts. Here at Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center there is stadium seating behind courts 1 and 2, pavilion viewing behind courts 3 and 4 and courts 5 and 6, and then there is the special option. Between the paired courts 1 and 2 and paired courts 3 and 4 there is a small seating area for spectators. Similarly, between the paired courts 1 and 2 and paired courts 5 and 6 there is a small seating area for spectators. This gives the spectators up close viewing that is not often available. It was there that I chose to be and moved from one section to the other to enjoy close up action on all courts. Admission is free and the action is great!! Try it out! See more..
  11. 5.0 Bailey Branch Park (1 review)
    - A nice neighborhood park & playground fro small kids
    Spent < 1 hour Parks • Playgrounds
Small, but well maintained, park with playground equipment and walking trails. A large parking area makes this park usable for folks driving. The equipment includes slides, equipment for climbing, and other contraptions. The walking path is good for kids' strollers, jogging and walking. Playgroung/park is easily reached from local highway and from local neighborhoods. See more..

    University of Mississippi image
Ole Miss is a typical southern university worthy of its SEC affiliation. Their footfall stadium is huge since all SEC schools seem to be obsessed with football. When we visited all of the Magnolia trees on campus were in bloom which really add to the attractiveness of the campus. See more..

    - Modest and comfortable home

    Rowan Oak image
We had been trying for some time to visit the home where William Faulkner lived for the better part of 30 years until his death. I was surprised at how modest and comfortable the home is. The admission is only $5 and you can wander around the lower and upper levels, learning about the author and his family. Well worth a visit. Take time to walk the Bailey’s Woods trail (about a mile) to the University of Mississippi Art Museum. See more..

  16. 4.5 Confederate Cemetery (39 reviews)
    - Educational and interesting
    Cemeteries
    Confederate Cemetery image
This is a great place for history buffs. Although it is a drive through, some walking to read the plaques and such is good. There is a lot to see and very interesting and educational. To stand at the top of the hill and look out over the battlefield is amazing. It is time consuming so plan on at least half the day. Due to Covid the centers were not open and some things were limited. Also no restrooms available on the route. I do recommend this place. See more..
  17. 4.5 Lamar Park (33 reviews)
    - The scenery is uhhhmazing
    Spent 1-2 hours Parks
    Lamar Park image
This is one of the best places to come for a jog, a walk, to relax and enjoy the scenery, to bring your pet, and or to bring your kids and let them run around. It is so beautiful. There are benches throughout that allow you to just sit and take in the view. There are some amazing sculptures to check out. You will love this park. The only reason I didn’t give it a 5 start raining is because throughout this giant park there are no bathrooms that are open. This is a huge inconvenience especially when you got children. I had to drive to the nearest shell station to use the bathroom. They could add something like Porter potty’s. Other than that it’s amazing. See more..
  18. 4.5 The University of Mississippi Museum (22 reviews)
    - Enjoyed our visit!
    Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
The University of Mississippi Museum image
My husband and I enjoyed visiting this museum. The Museum Director greeted us warmly and was very welcoming. The young lady working at the front desk was friendly. The museum does not charge admission so that it is accessible to all. They used to charge admission for the special exhibits but no longer do that. We enjoyed seeing the very detailed ink drawings from an Italian artist in the 18th century. The scientific instruments were very interesting. There was a good collection of ancient Roman artifacts also. This small museum is well worth a visit! See more..
  19. 4.5 Bailey Woods Trail (19 reviews)
    - Pleasant hike from the University Museum to Wm Faulkner's Home
    Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails
    Bailey Woods Trail image
This trail, with some minor relocation has existed for years. It leads from the University of Mississippi Museum parking lot to William Faulkner's home in Oxford. While only a little more than a quarter of a mile, you walk from the bustling university campus through Bailey's Woods. While there the other day, I happened upon three deer, numerous songbirds, and saw tracks from a racoon. A nice way to break up a visit to a busy college campus. Don't neglect to stop at the museum, it contains an eclectic collection of items ranging from dressed fleas, Greek and Roman antiquities and current exhibitions. See more..
  20. 4.5 College Hill Presbyterian Church (11 reviews)
    - Beautiful Church, Wm Faulkner's chapel.
    Historic Sites • Religious Sites
    College Hill Presbyterian Church image
College Hill Presbyterian lies about 5 miles north of Oxford, and was the religious home of William Faulkner. The antebellum brick chapel, displaying it's original stained glass and bead board walls that predate you or I, was my family's church for generations. I attended weddings and funerals there as a child, and proposed to my wife within those walls as a young adult. Visit the grounds, take in the things those 4 walls have witnessed over the last 150 years. See more..

    - Peaceful well maintained
Spent 2-3 hours Biking Trails • Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Thacker Mountain Rail Trail image
Also known as the whirlpool. This is the old rail line of the Mississippi Railroad. 3 miles long with multiple off shoots. Along the way is a historical marker for the Buckner's Trestle train wreck (x2 train wrecks). This is a popular trail, Parking can be a premium item, but despite being popular and well used, you can go for a long time without seeing anyone. Very relaxing. As you would expect with a rail trail, it's pretty flat. See more..
  23. 4.5 L. Q.C. Lamar house Museum (9 reviews)
    - A True American Hero at Home
    History Museums
    L. Q.C. Lamar house Museum image
Historically this is such an important museum house. LQC Lamar was a great Mississippian who, after the Civil War which he helped spawn, became a great American. The restoration work is brilliant - and the story that is told by the displays in the various rooms is both moving and instructive. Lamar went from apologist for slavery to atoner for past wrongs and a moral standard for all of us. An important visit for anyone interested in American history. Full disclosure - my mother was born in the LQC Lamar House in 1915. See more..

  27. 4.5 Cedar Oaks (4 reviews)
    - Must visit
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
The house is amazing. The ladies who care for the house are some of the most gracious, informative people that you will ever meet. This historic home is standing only because for the last two centuries Oxford women have saved it from the ravages of arson and developers. The house is staged with wonderful furnishings and items customary for a Civil War mansion. The lady who gave my family a tour knew everything about the house and Oxford in general She gave me maps which she had marked with other historical sites of Oxford. Previous, historical owners were involved in all aspects of Oxford business and literary society. The connections are fascinating. If you are visiting Oxford, you need to tour the house just to meet the ladies who maintain the mansion, learn about the culture of Oxford, and receive recommendations on what else to visit. 29. 4.5 The Lafayette County Courthouse (2 reviews)
    - Faulkner's fictional courthouse
    Government Buildings
    The Lafayette County Courthouse image
The Lafayette County Courthouse is the centerpiece of the historic Oxford Courthouse Square in Oxford, Mississippi. Located in the center of the square, surrounded by restaurants, art galleries, boutiques, department stores, book stores and other shops, it was constructed in 1872 to replace an earlier building that was destroyed during the Civil War. The two-story building was designed in the Greek Revival and Italianate architectural styles with four columns atop the arched entryway. Of most interest is the fact that the courthouse plays a significant role in Oxford native William Faulkner's fictional Yoknapatawpha County, which is based on Lafayette County where the Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winning author spent most of his life. The courthouse appears in many of Faulkner's short stories and novels. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. See more..
