- 5.0 St. Landry Parish Visitor Center (6 reviews)
-Friendly staff
Tuesday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Visitor Centers
The center, opened in May 2011, not only provides travelers with information on the area, including historic and cultural traditions, but it is one of the first visitor information centers in the state and the southern region that has a focus on sustainability and green construction. The building was designed to show how sustainable practices, both old and new, can work together for the betterment of the region. Sustainable features of the center include a water cistern, wind turbine and photovoltaic panels. Building materials were salvaged during construction to reuse for the creation of an art exhibit and functional pieces to be shown and utilized within the center. This project was completed by area artists, craftsmen and students. Travelers are also introduced to the various ecosystems found within the area. The landscape design plays an integral part in this project utilizing indigenous plantings and trees from St. Landry Parish, reflecting several of Louisiana's ecosystems. Our Our travel counselors are ready to provide group or individual tours of the facility. We look forward to seeing you in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana! See more..

-It touches your heart.
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
When I saw the sign on the door that said…..no camera or pictures, I became disappointed. But I went inside and understood why no pictures. The tour guide gives a detailed tour of all of the children that were orphaned in New York City and then taken in by the priests and nuns to find homes for them. To see their personal lives on the wall touches your heart. See more..
- 4.5 Le Vieux Village de Poste des Opelousas (21 reviews)
-Fun stop for Opelousas area history
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
This was a great little stop for Opelousas area history. The buildings and grounds are well taken care of and feature actual artifacts. Of particular interest is the “Venus House”, a residence dating back to the 1700’s and once home to a freed slave. All of the buildings are furnished and feature detailed descriptions of items. We loved the plants and flowers growing around the little village. There are plenty of benches for taking a break in the shade. There is a gift shop with a small collection of souvenirs. Will definitely return. See more..
- 4.5 Slim's Y-Ki-Ki (2 reviews)
-Slims , a genuine zydeco dance hall
Bars & Clubs
I love Slims. Slim's New Years night Zydeco party is an experience zydeco dancers must experience. Festival weekends are good times to go to Slims. This is a traditionally black dance hall. Generally the races mix well here and I have always felt welcome, except once when Kieth Frank was playing . The crowd was mostly young, and were pretty rude to me as an outsider. But I see that an an exception. I've been there on many occasions and have always had a good time. Pork is cooked in a large smoker out in the yard and the sandwiches made are excellent. It's a very good Louisiana experience. See more..
- 4.0 Opelousas Museum & Interpretive Center (6 reviews)
-For a small town, this is a nice effort
Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
The last thing I would have expected in a small Louisiana town was a museum! We drove past this, had some time to kill before lunch and decided to go in and check it out. The building has several rooms that tell about the history of the city and the people that founded it. There is also a very nice doll collection that is interesting. The docent is a very nice lady who is very happy to share with you more information about the town and answer any questions you may have. There is no charge for the museum, but donations are accepted. Next time you are in Opelousas, you should drop in. It is a pleasant way to spend a little time out of the hot Louisiana sun. See more..

- 3.0 Opelousas Public Library (3 reviews)
-South Louisiana genealogical research
Spent 1-2 hours Libraries
If you're going to south Louisiana to find your roots, the Opelousas Public Library has a ton of resources for you. There are multiple copies of some of the reference books and the area is packed with information. They have full sets of the Baton Rouge diocese records and the amazing books by Father Hebert which list all the baptisms, marriages and deaths in the area. They even have resources for Mississippi. I found a ton of information not available online. They are woefully understaffed and so getting help wasn't easy. But if you can do the searching yourself, this is a great place. We also visited the St. Landry Parish Courthouse and they bent over backward to help us out in finding family history. See more..
