Our friends wanted to go to their favorite flower shop, turns out it was also our favorite. This place is the best. One year I purchased Edelweiss! Can't find that most places and Carley (sp?) told me how to plant it and it is growing nicely. Funny to have the Swiss Alps in your back yard. Our friends got a Norway Variegated Maple tree that they could not find elsewhere. See more..
  8. 4.5 Sugar River State Trail (23 reviews)
    - 2019 Review good but be careful
Spent More than 3 hours Biking Trails • Hiking Trails
    Sugar River State Trail image
This preview is of the status as of late July 2019. Again this is a nice trail with three easily rideable segments. The parking is best at Albany, Monticello and New Glarus. (Brodhead parking is farther away from the trail). There are large paved lots with toilets and water at each. Be aware that the trail is mostly crushed limestone with some packed down dirt or sandy areas and nothing paved. The Monticello-New Glarus segment is the best groomed and easiest to ride with clear mile markers. The Brodhead-Albany and Albany-Monticello segments are generally not as well groomed and have lots of sticks, overgrown areas and serious potholes. Albany-Monticello is the longest but the most senic with numerous bridges. On the Brodhead-Albany segment I encountered a fallen tree that I had to walk my bike around. This section has long areas of only one rideable path so you have to be very careful if you meet another rider. Also there are some serious potholes, which I watch for very close, but I still hit one that almost rattled my teeth out. Again I advise you to NOT use a road bike on this trail. I have a newer Trek trail hybrid and still blew out BOTH tires and tubes beyond repair. (see photo with red colored pens inserted in tire holes for reference). I still like this trail and generally stop by either Albany or New Glarus for lunch. Enjoy but be careful. See more..

Chalet of the Golden Fleece Museum image
The tours here are free, but I always leave a donation. This is a really cool Swiss style house that is now a museum. The artifacts in the museum were owned and collected by a wealthy local man who loved to travel. Most are European, and some VERY old, but there are some from Asia and South America also. The value of these items must be priceless! I highly recommend this tour. See more..

    - Fun for everyone from LARPers to ogres, parents and children
Spent 2-3 hours Theatre & Performances
A Gathering of Rogues and Ruffians image
I have attended this gathering before, and every year it gets better. More food, more vendors, more people demonstrating old and ancient ways of making tools, armor and weaponry, along with maidens, warriors, jousters, jesters, actors, singers, musicians, sellers of amulets, food and clothing; witches, warlocks, steamy-punks, tiny fairies and elves and everything in between. Live-action role players were there in abundance and I had a great time admiring their garments - everything from chain maille and armor to bustiers and corsets..... I overheard one attendee saying that he thought he would be embarrassed to be there in costume, but he felt right at home. A few days later I found myself researching costumes online. I think I'll probably make one for next year! See more..

    Swissland Miniature Golf image
Our daughter really wanted to play miniature golf on our weekend trip. We took a side trip to play in New Glarus. It was $25 for 4 players. Holes were pretty well maintained. There is very little shade on the course so we sweated a lot during the 18 holes. Not a lot of people so we were able to stay socially distanced. Would recommend for an hour or so of fun. See more..
