Cited as a must see in the New York Times travel section, Paper Moon is a one of a kind store located in McGregor, Iowa-just a block from the Mississippi River! Ken, Louise, and Jennifer opened the Paper Moon in 1994. The historic 1860’s building proudly went solar in 2009. The Paper Moon has been described as “the ultimate in therapy shopping.” The ground floor hosts a unique array of gifts, including jewelry, greeting cards, toiletries, housewares, and tons of fun stuff! The second level balcony holds an array of new books and handmade housewares; the third level is 1,000 square feet of children’s books and toys in a relaxing atmosphere. Inventory is in constant flux and Louise and Jennifer work hard to make sure the store has something for everyone. Customer service is important to staff at Paper Moon. 5. 4.5 Pikes Peak State Park (352 reviews)
    - Great Fall Hiking and Views
    State Parks
    Pikes Peak State Park image
The park lived up to its billing as a fall color must do in NE Iowa! Even though we visited on a Thursday there were a lot of visitors. It was a beautiful fall day and we took advantage of a well placed table on the bluff to enjoy lunch prior to a hike. We took a couple of back loops off the parking lot to work our way to the main attractions; the Bridal Falls Overlook and the Crows Nest Overlook. The hiking was moderate with some elevation. Fall colors were prime and we thoroughly enjoyed the exercise, fall color and the views. After a few requisite pictures we were off to our next adventure, the Effigy Mounds National Monument. 6. 4.5 Downtown McGregor (36 reviews)
    - A Galena, IL alternative
    Speciality & Gift Shops
    Downtown McGregor image
If you like the quaint upper-midwest river town atmosphere then this might be the spot for you. Most of the circa late 1800's buildings have been rehabbed, probably to better-than-new condition, and are now occupied by modern, tourist-oriented shops and restaurants. I was there on a pleasant mid-August Thursday and found a few visitors, family groups and seniors, walking around. Street and lot parking was plentiful, convenient and free. I have no idea about crowding at peak times but I suspect that the more remote location compared to Galena, IL may moderate it. This can be bad for business and people-watching but great for convenience and comfort. See more..
  7. 4.5 Froelich Foundation Museum (15 reviews)
    - Where the Farm Tractor began
Friday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Speciality Museums
    Froelich Foundation Museum image
The docents were very knowledgable of the history of the Froelich Tractor and the man who invented it. This little shop is where the Froelich tractor was invented which was the beginning of the John Deere tractor industry. Such a small town with a huge impact on the farming industry. I grew up on a family farm in the 40's, 50's and 60's. Many of the items in this museum are what we were using when I grew up. It was really nice to see so many familiar things that I grew up with and the docent was so nice to spend time telling us about them. We drove all the way up from our home in Texas just to see this place, the Bily Clock Museum, and the National Farm Toy Museum. Don't miss spending some time here. It is great! See more..

  9. 4.0 Spook Cave (146 reviews)
    - So good already booked for next year!
    Friday: 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM Spent 1-2 hours Caverns & Caves
    Spook Cave image
First timer this year and l was totally impressed with the staff, amenities, and fishing here. Our trailer was backed right up to the trout stream, and being an avid fly fisherman it didn't take much to land a dozen nice brown trout within 20' of my trailer. The fishing pond did not require a license and we caught many bass, bluegill, and bream! I am also a bird photographer and I didn't have to leave my campchair to get many photos. Yes, the train comes thru and blows the whistle at night but I didn't feel that it hindered our stay here. Matter of fact we already booked for almost two weeks next year before we left! See more..
