  2. 5.0 Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration Motherhouse (94 reviews)
    - A Special Anniversary Mass
    Religious Sites
Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration Motherhouse image
We got married in this St. Rose Chapel 50 years ago (August 19, 1972) we and decided to return on our 50th anniversary for a Mass and a blessing by the priest (if he would be willing). I was an alumni who earned a nursing degree in l973. We were given contact information to the sister in charge of the liturgies. She spoke to the retired priest who offers Mass during the week and he was willing and happy to include us on this special day. We were filled with joy by the welcome extended to us by the sisters that live in this convent and by the priest who celebrated Mass that day. Plus he gave a beautiful sermon about love and commitment. And the sister that played the organ and piano also played a hymn on the harp. It penetrated our souls. After the Mass we were given a special tour of the chapel for Perpetual Adoration. See more..
  3. 5.0 Copeland Park (16 reviews)
    - Not of visit to La Crosse without seeing a Loggers game.
Spent More than 3 hours Arenas & Stadiums
    Copeland Park image
I'm was not a baseball fan until I went to a Loggers game. You are so close to the action that you can't help but get involved. The food and drinks are good, price is right, parking is a hassle, sense of community is 100%. Don't miss out on the action. It's part of summer in La Crosse. See more..
  4. 5.0 The Best Dam Fishing Float (10 reviews)
    - Great day of fishing
Spent More than 3 hours Farms
The Best Dam Fishing Float image
We spent a day on the barge with my teenage step son and his friend. The pontoon service from the boat landing to the float and back was great. Pizza and burgers were available for purchase at lunch time. The porto-johns were clean. The husband and child had gone to Klement's Fishing Barge previously. They chose this one when taking me because they thought I might have an issue with the somewhat disgusting restroom situation at Klement's. I'm told the fishing wasn't as good the day we were out on BDFF, but I enjoyed myself for the full 9 hours were were out there - which is saying something. I took some great photographs of the river and various fish that were caught that were day. See more..
  5. 5.0 Weber Center for the Performing Arts (9 reviews)
    - Pleasant Venue
    Spent 2-3 hours Theaters
Weber Center for the Performing Arts image
This is a very pleasant venue that is easy to visit. You can easily find everything you need - from "will call" to restrooms to snacks (when available). The auditorium is small enough that you feel close to the stage and included in the presentation. The sound system is adequate and the presentation was well administered. Haven't been here for a concert, but I think the acoustics would be nice, as well. Easy parking in the lot kitty-corner across the street, if you can't find street parking. See more..
  6. 5.0 Upper Hixon Forrest Park (5 reviews)
    - Legacy of Ellen Hixon
Spent 1-2 hours Scenic Walking Areas
    Upper Hixon Forrest Park image
I would rename this page into Hixon Forest. The forest is a sprawling entity, with multiple trails and many parking lots, and divided into subsections. Upper Hixon Forest is just one such subsection. This gem was gifted to the city of La Crosse by Ellen Hixon ages ago. Her monument and the story are commemorated at the Grandad Bluff - separate La Crosse Park bordering Hixon Forest. See more..

    Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails
La Crosse Blufflands North - County Rd B Trailhead image
This was my first introduction to La Crosse Bluffs - area protected by the city of La Crosse in partnership with Mississippi Valley Conservancy. Enchanted by the sheer beauty of the place, I've visited all of the units ever since. Get maps for all five units, and go hiking now, before it gets too hot - most units (this one in particular) require steep ascend to the top of the bluffs. See more..

    Wednesday: Speciality Museums
    Dahl Auto Museum image
Our Mississippi River cruise included a stop at La Crosse, and the tour bus took us to the museum, which had opened early because of our boat's schedule. It was a lot of fun to see the old cars, read their descriptions, and see the artifacts that were cleverly placed nearby. This was the only time that I'd been to La Crosse, and I'm very glad that we went to the museum (which I hadn't known about beforehand). See more..

I stumbled across this in tourism brochures prior to our arrival. How excited I was to find it was literally right behind our hotel! I visited on foot both mornings of our stay while on my walk. It is small in scale but absolutely beautiful right on the banks of the Mississippi River. Each country has its own area and is dutifully taken care of. Please see the pictures; they will do it more justice than any description here. Don't miss! See more..
  16. 4.5 Hixon House (38 reviews)
    - Fabulous!!
    Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites
    Hixon House image
Historic Hixon House was built in 1858 by pioneer Gideon Hixon, who went on to become a wealthy lumber baron in La Crosse. He and his wife Ellen raised their five sons in this home and expanded it to the size it is today. The family had for many years retained the home in close to the same state that Ellen Hixon left it when she died in 1913. In 1965, their descendants gifted the house to LCHS complete with its original Victorian and Arts and Crafts furnishings. Our knowledgeable docents will guide you through this piece of La Crosse history. See more..

  19. 4.5 Mary of the Angels Chapel (18 reviews)
    - One of my favorite large churches
    Wednesday: Churches & Cathedrals
Mary of the Angels Chapel image
Fascinating, gorgeous architecture inside and out. Unique. Interesting history. I'm a fan of church architecture, and surely this is the most beautiful and interesting example between St. Paul and Chicago. The interior has a soft, luscious look and feel that makes more modern churches (incl the nearby Shrine) look like an insurance company lobby. Occasionally the sisters host a concert in the Chapel, which is an opportunity not to be missed! See more..

  30. 3.5 La Crosse River State Trail (14 reviews)
    - On a Fattie
Spent More than 3 hours Biking Trails • Hiking Trails
Visited my parents again in LaCrosse and this time i rode the trail on my fat bike since there had been some rain in the area. I'm highly impressed with the trail system around LaCrosse even though i still wish more of it was paved. Found some new trails that take you right in to Riverside Park from County Rd B which is a great way to see some of the marshland. Also did some fattie riding on the Trails up in Hixon Forest/Upper Hixon. More great riding although I had a hard time navigating the trails on upper Hixon Forest as there were so many unmarked intersections. Sure be nice to have some maps along the trails and have local bike shops pay for the signage and use it as free advertising as well!! Hint: take a photo of the map at the trailhead with your cell phone so you have some reference. Also learned that roots and rocks can be REALLY slippery after a rain so be careful. Much different riding then the arid trails in CO and i loved how green it was. See more..
