  2. 5.0 Turkey River Mounds State Preserve (1 review)
    - Blown away
Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas
It was that warm windy day in March where I was literally blown away. But seriously, I was even more impressed by this visit. This 82 acre forested ridge state preserve boasts many conical and linear Indian mounds. Many of these have been documented to be as old as 2500 years. Some are only two to eight feet in diameter or 10 to 20 feet in diameter. Some of the linear mound are four feet high and six feet across. There are only a few other places in Iowa that I have encountered such mounds. These being: Effigy Mounds at or near Marquette, Iowa just up the river; Bellevue, Iowa; Toolesboro; even near Cedar Rapids; Pikes Peak near McGregor. This place has a daily visitor. Their are railroad tracks that are parked right near the main entrance of the parking area so be on your guard. The outcroppings of limestone that I am sure have been climbed on over the years can look forboding but just watch your step and you will be fine. The DNR has planted an American flag upon one of the headpoints of the bluffs here and its flutters in the wind constantly. I spied so many bald eagles that day I couldn't count them all. Bring water and good hiking boots with you. This place is so remote that you will need to stop and ask directions. Flooding occurs here this time of year so be on your guard. I noticed a pair of guys working the railroad nearby and they told me that just a few hundred yards from where I was major flooding was happening. So always plan accordingly. The front entrance way to this place is on a minimum maintenance road level B(which means enter at your own risk). I have a four wheel drive vehicle for this purpose. The road in/out was muddy at times but well worth it. The main parking area is wheelchair accessible but that's it. The climb to the mounds and the escarpment are tricky. Bring waterproof boots with a good lug on the sole. Wear gloves as well for gripping. All in all a great day was had by me here. Well worth the drive. In my opinion. See more..

Beautiful waterfall just steps from the parking area. Nice, stepped trail to the top. Very short, not strenuous. A mile or two north of Guttenberg off Great River Road on the west side of the road. Picnic shelter. No facilities except porta pot. Trail available too but did not use due to mosquitoes when we were there. See more..
