  1. 5.0 Museum of Minerals & Crystals (13 reviews)

This was a stop on a nice short trip we did consisting of this museum, Dodge State Park to see the waterfall, House on the Rock, Cave of the Mound, the Shoebox shoe store in Black Earth, and lunch in Madison at Hawks. Totally worth the admission to see the collection. There’s some really interesting specimens in there. Bring some money for their store as they have better prices than most for what I’ve seen offered but it all depends on what they have that day. The owner is super nice. Hours are variable so try to reach them by phone before heading there to make sure they’ll be open. Museum is fine for older kids, but little kids would likely not be interested unless they like rocks and minerals. See more..

We lucked out and discovered them 15 minutes before they closed for the day and we we got the last bag of cheese curds. The cheddar cheese was very tasty and we enjoyed it throughout our trip. If you plan in advance, you can call them and ask for flavored cheese curds....otherwise they just have plain yellow cheddar for $5/bag. See more..

  4. 5.0 Kate's Bait (1 review)
    - Great Family Friendly Store
Spent < 1 hour Speciality & Gift Shops
When we visited Gov. Dodge State Park, we discovered a place right down the road called Kate's Bait. I was told she just opened up in October and is open all year around. If you need firewood, THIS is the place to go. You can get the same firewood at the State park, but she will throw in some starter wood for you as well. She also has logs that burn nice for the campfire. They last a long time and only $5.00 a crate! Besides the great deals we discovered there, her and her father are super nice to talk with. All three of our guys enjoyed some hunting stories from Kate's Dad. They have boat rentals too. We rented a canoe and loved it. They have clothing, groceries, live bait etc... whatever you need. It's a nice little convenient store if you happened to forget something when you go camping. They also sell fishing licenses, which works out nice if you didn't get a chance to buy one before you left to go camping. AND they are right down the road from the State park(2 miles north or 1 mile south). See more..
  5. 4.5 Governor Dodge State Park (215 reviews)
    - Be sure to visit the waterfall!
    State Parks

We made a stop in this park to see the beautiful Stephens' Waterfall, but a scenic drive through the park is a worthy goal, too! My parents took us to this park decades ago and we swam in the lake and chased the minnows. It's good to see some things haven't changed much. If you have a WI DNR patron license as I did, you can get in free with a printout of your state parks "sticker," which they will trade for an actual windshield sticker at the front gate. Otherwise it's about $8 admission for your carload. Many nice picnic areas and hiking trails, plus a concession stand by the lake. See more..

Our daughter got married at this facility and it was a perfect setting. The staff was excellent to deal with. They had suggestions on vendors to use were very accommodating and spelled out clearly what our options were. We used all of the facility including the old church (remember to turn the air on ahead of time) the bunk house and the meeting barn. Our caterer used the kitchen and felt it was of high quality. We used their local tent company for tent, tables and portable stage and that went very well. The scenery showing in the background is beautiful. The wedding theme was a circus theme and we had plenty of space to set up and used the meeting hall for the dance. A GREAT facility and staff. See more..
