   This is a free adventure. From Clintwood it is about 10 miles to the observation tower and there are occasional signs to encourage you along your way. The adventure begins when you turn off the paved road onto a single lane gravel road (looks more like a driveway) and begin a 5 mile climb to the top full of switchbacks. Do not advise taking a low-clearance car as the road has some ruts. The SUV went handily up and we saw a hatchback arrive later. So in the parking area there is a vault toilet, access to the Pine Meadow Trail, and a trail to the observation tower (short walk) where you climb 183 steps where tower labels orient you to views of KY, TN, OH, WV, and NC all while standing in VA.
