- 4.5 Crooked Road Heritage Music Trail (11 reviews)
-Virginia's Fantastic Crooked Road Music
Hiking Trails
We spent 4 days on a central section of this "trail" and loved every minute of it. The whole trail covers about 300 miles of lower Virginia countryside; we covered only about 150 miles of it. Mountain views, backroads, and HERITAGE MOUNTAIN MUSIC are THE attractions. It's all about "an authentic music that has been preserved by the region's musicians for generations." There are lots of free venues and the others are for a most modest fee. We had seen a TV "travelogue" a couple of years ago and finally got up there. Can't wait to go back ... perhaps to one of the many annual festivals. We were slightly surprised by the motel / hotel rates throughout the area in mid-August. Comfort Suites / Holiday Inn Express type accomodations averaged about $89/nt mid-week and up to abt. $129/nt on weekends. Best advice is to go on line to: www.thecrookedroad.org for all the details you need to plan your trip. See more..
- 4.5 Greenbelt Walking And Bicycle Trail (2 reviews)
-First Class Trail
Biking Trails
We really were impressed by the Greenbelt Walking and Bicycle trail that circles downtown Big Stone Gap. This three-mile level, paved, and lighted trail provided us with a quiet and scenic walk along the Powell River and the South Fork of the Powell River. It was in first class condition. We passed parks and backyards, we saw Great Blue Herons fishing for food, we enjoyed being shaded by mature trees, and we enjoyed the solitude. Well done. We walk allot when we travel, and this was one of the nicest places we have walked. In fact, we did the entire 3.0 mile loop twice back-to-back. See more..
- 4.0 Harry W. Meador Jr. Coal Museum (18 reviews)
-Riveting...
Thursday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
Thank you, museum interpreter, coalminer, Freddy Elkins; you made my father's days in the mines real for my family. I had tried to share that with young people for years...but...after an afternoon with Freddy, they finally understood how my father (and so many others) died in a coal mine, and how some of us feel about that way of life. The museum's presentation is so faithful, so fair. See more..
- 4.0 Bullitt Park (1 review)
-Lovely Park
Parks
This is a good sized park for children to play. It includes many places for them to climb and slide. There is also a very large tree house. As well as a small water pad for kids to splash in on hot days. There are two large picnic table areas for picnics, birthday parties, or for parents to sit while their kids are playing. The only down side is the bathrooms aren't well kept. Bring your own toilet paper and some hand sanitizer. See more..

-Docents are knowledgeable but not much to see
Speciality Museums
This place was much smaller than it appears in the ads. The docents are kind and eager to share the histories of the families who lived in this house. But there's not much to see. The little gift shop on the ground level has a mix of historical and modern trinkets. The docents' description of restoration efforts, and some of the old photographs on the hallway walls were interesting. See more..
