Beautiful location, very welcoming and gracious hosts, interesting lavender products in the cute store, interesting to walk through the lavender fields (most of the harvesting is done by August). 8. 4.5 Mirror Lake State Park (231 reviews)
    - A Hike and a Paddle
    Wednesday: 6:00 AM - 11:00 PM Parks
    Mirror Lake State Park image
Mirror Lake was about 10 minutes away from our campground so we decided to spend the afternoon hiking and paddling in rented kayaks. After paying for our state park pass, we decided to go on the Ishnali Trail which went through the woods, over a bridge and through a field. The trail was wide and not too long, and went by the road to the famous Ishnali supper club (fun picture by the teepee.) Later we drove to the boat ramp where we were able to rent a double kayak for an hour. The lake doesn't allow motors so it was beautiful and easy to paddle. Even so I am glad we only rented the kayak for 1 hour! There was an outhouse there which was smelly but adequate, and down the road there is a beach for those who would like to swim. It was a fun outdoor day. See more..
  9. 4.5 Parfrey's Glen (223 reviews)
    - This was probably a one time challenge...

    Parfrey's Glen image
Did it on Saturday, May 8, 2021: This was a nice Saturday with many people of various ages at the Glen. I am 75yr old male. Losing balance. Fear of heights. Love biking, hiking and horseshoeing (the game). This Glen was a challenge for me. A major challenge. Glad I had my hiking pole. My feet spent many steps in the water. My pole answered my call many times to help me slowly make it along rocks of 5" and 3' on/in the creek, and thru 6' rocks on the path I would design. The pole never helped me walk on the branches that lie on the creek, but sorta helped me over on a couple. My movements were slow, but I had frequent concern for rapid tumble down from rocks I had crawled up. This was AN EVENT! I feel I accomplished something. I am not sure I should try it again. My body, mind and the clock require me to carefully consider challenges like this one. But I did it! See more..

    Driftless Glen Distillery image
A nice relaxing visit to Driftless Glen in Baraboo, WI. Fab food (many menu items on the spicy side). Incredible desserts. We had brussel sprout app, hubby had steakburger, I had Huli chicken sandwich (not spicy although it has Siracha mayo). The Strawberry smash and Blackberry Old Fashioned were wonderful. Had a flight of bourbon, single barrel rye (much more open and tasty with a few drops of water) , and the S'more Rivershine (great nose but may need to right cocktail to make it truly shine). Even the coffee was excellent Highly recommend if you are seeking local tipple near the Dells. Also accross from the circus museum. See more..
  13. 4.5 Al. Ringling Mansion (114 reviews)
    - Very interesting tour.
Wednesday: 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
    Al. Ringling Mansion image
Excellent tour by our guide Kim. She took the time to explain many details about the family and the house and answered all of our questions (and we had many). So much history within the walls. There has been alot of work done to bring it back to its original glory, and that is still ongoing now. They are doing a great job and paying attention to detail. Many of the furniture pieces in the house are original, as are the chandeliers and other items. It was owned by the local Elks Club for many years, and they made many changes which the new owners are now working on remodeling to keep the history of the family house intact. SIde note - when we took the tour, it was cash only, no credit cards were accepted. There is an ATM on site in the attached brewery/restaurant. See more..

    - Serene and gorgeous
Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality & Gift Shops • Farms
New Life Lavender & Cherry Farm image
Quiet, scenic The lavender was harvested as it was late September, yet there was much to enjoy. Wandering the paths amongst the wildflowers provided acres of eye candy and photo ops. That was my favorite part. I do recommend the lavender cherry pie ala mode with lavender ice cream and the lavender spiced tea, and enjoy eating it outdoors. Staff friendly and knowledgeable. We spent about 2 hours here, taking it all in. I would say prices are moderate given the times we're in. All in all, I consider it a good value and would patronize this establishment again. - What a Great Way to Drive into the Dells-Baraboo Area.
Nature & Wildlife Areas • Geologic Formations
    Baraboo Bluffs image
The Bluffs seen from Highway C is quite a view. One of the best thing about Wisconsin is that you can see so many types of landscapes. The Old Baraboo Range is not the Rockies but thes mountains were high enough to peak out over thousands of feet of glacial till. The Devil's Lake State Park is a good place to get a closer look at these ancient mountains. If you just go into the Dells from I94, you are missing a lot. See more..

    - Great for young families!
    Hiking Trails
    Pewit's Nest Gorge image
There were a few other younger families exploring that day. The water is clear and cold, not super deep. If you have a younger kiddo and they plan to actually swim, they may need a puddle jumper/life jacket. My 8 year old went about knee-deep was had more fun looking for crawfish while my 11 year old was taking pictures of the cliffs surrounding us. I went about half way to the falls. Extremely easy “hike”, and I would definitely recommend to families with smaller kids. See more..

  25. 4.0 Historical Man Mound (9 reviews)
    - The Sole Survivor
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Historical Man Mound image
Wisconsin is home to what used to be thousands of Native American Mounds, with hundreds still surviving. There were several man-like effigies as well, but this is the only one left - and not intact (legs have been cut off to make a road). This mound is so unique that not only it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places (happens fairly often), but was recently recognized as a National Historical Landmark (that's a very rare definition, with only 2,500 landmarks in the entire country). Effigy Mounds are almost unique to southern Wisconsin and surroundings, and this one is unique among unique. See more..
  26. 4.0 International Clown Hall of Fame (9 reviews)
    - Lots of improvements and not a bad show
    Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
International Clown Hall of Fame image
Last time we visited had to be 20 years ago. A lot has been done to the place. The main building at entrance has the history and story of the Ringling Brothers. Some excellent exhibits and interaction stops. Then crossing the bridge to the older section their focus has remained largely on finding and restoring the old circus wagons which were elaborate and vital to moving the circus even after trains were added to the transportation plan. They also have expanded the small circus they do each day, so be sure to arrive for a least 1/2 a day to catch some of the acts individually at different sites. And do not miss the final show of day under the Big Top. For kids that rarely get to witness a circus anymore is as real as it gets. Well worth the 4-6 hour investment. See more..
