This is our favorite Brewery on Route 151! Scratch Kitchen has a food truck with some amazing sandwiches! The outdoor set up is what really draws us in. Out back you can sit by the creek while your kids are playing in the creek. Maybe jump in a hammock and stay awhile!! Every time we've gone, there has been live music with some GREAT local talent. The staff is super friendly and their drinks are AWESOME! Great vibe, I could stay all day...lol. Can't wait to go back! See more..

  5. 4.5 Blue Ridge Tunnel East Trailhead (14 reviews)
    - A great day trip
Thursday: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Biking Trails • Hiking Trails • Jogging Paths & Tracks
Blue Ridge Tunnel East Trailhead image
My wife and I made the 1 hour drive to Afton to check out this tunnel. From the Eastside parking lot, next to the old train station, the hike is a half mile to the tunnel entrance. We'll maintained and a safe surface to walk on. The tunnel is about a mile long and definitely requires a headlamp or flashlight. Nice and cool in mid June but a t-shirt is fine. A few uneven areas and a few holes to watch out for on the path thru and the edges can be a little slick from the water dripping inside. Each side has running water like creeks which does have crawdads, salamanders and frogs in them if you slow down and look closely. We exited the Westside and returned to where we parked. Definitely worth the time to check out the hard work that went into the making of this 1850's effort See more..

    Rockfish Gap Country Store image
Stopped in along the way back to Charlottesville. Nice country store to visit right on Highway 250. A lot of local artists and jarred goods. Pricing was moderate to high but good. Didn’t get a chance to see the upstairs because it’s too difficult for us to navigate the stairs. Their was selections of jewelry, dining room linens, jarred jams, jellies, sauces, and different types of art. Really enjoyed looking at the motorcycle weather vane which I’ve included a picture of. Oh and can’t forget the wine selection. See more..

Spring valley has sweetest cherries and their pick your own season runs from late May to mid June this year. Dates are weather depending and this year has plenty of fruits to pick. Orchard is located in a remote location with beautiful views of the blue ridge mountains. Unlike other PYO farms, this place does not sell any baked foods, so plan for your lunch. It does offer lot of shade for a good picnic if you are bringing your own food. Must visit for cherry lovers and PYO fans See more..

  10. 4.0 Flying Fox Vineyard (111 reviews)
    - Very nice winery
    Thursday: Wineries & Vineyards
    Flying Fox Vineyard image
It was a cold February day and I decided it was a good day to visit a winery. I did the red flight. They have a smooth cab franc that was aged in a Bourbon barrel. I ended up buying this one. The regular cab franc was very good. Merlot was a merlot. Then there was a trio of cab franc, merlot and petit verdot. That was OK. The final one was a table red called fox red. Is was a nice blend. The tasting is all subjective. My pourer, Ashley was awesome. She knew the wines and the area. The tasting room was cozy and fun even though I am not a big fan of taxidermized animals :). See more..

Upon arriving, the staff were so friendly and knowledgeable! I was able to order a flight to try both reds and whites, including adding a sparkling wine to try too. Some of the best wine I had had in the area while hopping vineyard to vineyard, plus the outdoor area has a gorgeous view with lots of picnic tables, chairs, and fire pits. Definitely will be returning! See more..

  14. 3.5 Swannanoa Palace (92 reviews)
    - Beautiful marble mansion but needs renovation
    Architectural Buildings
    Swannanoa Palace image
The building is magnificent (all in marble) and it is clear that the inside used to be as well. The owners are doing their best to maintain the building (and deal with vandalism and trespassing attempts, very sad). The tour is informative and details the history of the place. Some great element remains (grand staircase, huge Tiffany stained glass, one nice chimney) but overall the building is in a bad state. The gardens look nice as well and it is a good walk but again a good renovation would turn this place into an amazing landmark. See more..
  15. 1.5 Rockfish Gap Tourist Information Center (3 reviews)
    - Start your journey here
    Visitor Centers
Afton and Rockfish Gap have a lot of hidden attractions, restaurants, wineries, hiking trials etc. The visitors center is a great place to stop and get information to plan your day. Since it is at the top of Afton Mountain where the Appalachian Trail, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Skyline Drive through Shenandoah National Park meet and cross over Interstate 64 , its location not only provides a near 360 view of the Shenandoah and Rockfish Valleys, but makes a good center point for various trips or hikes. Make sure you ask for direction to the east or west trailheads of area's newest attraction, the Blue Ridge Tunnel which goes under the mountain upon which the Visitor Center is located . This tunnel was designed by Claudius Crozet and built in the 1850's. The Tunnel It was in use until the middle of WWII. It was abandoned and closed for over 75 years, but was opened to the public this year as Nelson County's newest park. See more..
