Ivindo NP is definitely not cheap. It's also not easy to reach by any stretch of the imagination. It took us a train ride, 5 hours by car and 4 hours on foot through the jungle to reach the camp. From there to Langoue Bai we had to hike for another couple of hours. Having said that, the experience was brilliant. This is probably the remotest place on Earth that I've ever visited. The wildlife watching and hearing is sublime. It truly feels like an Eden. Just make sure you're in decent shape and you're not too squeamish. We spotted Gorillas and Elephants aplenty, and heard many types of Monkey. We also spotted birds and insects aplenty. The guides and rangers were extremely helpful and accommodating, and the food was surprisingly tasty for such a remote location. See more..

  3. 4.0 Réserve de la Lopé (21 reviews)
    - Excellent arrangements to get to and stay at Lope, but weaknesses in logistics on the ground led to an opportunity lost

If you are going to Reserve de la Lope, you will probably be staying at Lope Hotel where you can watch wood buffalo graze on the grounds mornings and evenings. While the hotel is beautifully situated overlooking the Ogooue River, the private cabins are suffering from a lack of maintenance. Among eight cabins used by our group, some were without hot water, others had wiring but missing lights. The staff will smile and promise to attend to problems, but nothing was repaired over four nights. Beds and cleanliness were acceptable. Netting has been put under the entry eaves to exclude bats but it catches and strangles birds that abound in the gardens. Meanwhile, the tiny bats (which are really cute) still hang under the eaves outside the netting. Food was safe but unexceptional. Breakfast is limited to juice, tea or coffee, and French bread. No eggs or fruit. Limited menu at lunch and dinner, usually choice of meat or fish. Almost everything was over-salted. Times for game drives are pretty rigid as apparently the park does not open until 7:30 in the morning. Roads in the park have not been graded and are deeply rutted in some places. Expect to see forest elephant. During eight game drives, several species of monkeys were spotted, but no mandrills. One sighting of sitatunga and a few brief glimpses of duiker. See more..
