Laguna De Sinamaica, Zulian Region, Venezuela

4.5 (3 reviews) Spent Ranking #24 in Maracaibo Bodies of Water

Phenomenal place that is almost completely untouched by tourism.

Sinamaica makes a great day trip from Maracaibo or a convenient sightseeing pit-stop on the way to/from the Colombian border. It is a community of indigenous people who have made their homes on the lake, as they have done for centuries. The community is quite extensive and has a church, shops, recreation areas etc all of which can be visited by arranging for a boat tour from the main port (about 10 mins off the main highway to/from the border). A tour involves roughly 30 mins on the water, not including the stops to the bar, church and a few other places you might feel are of interest. You'll need about 2 hours to get a feel for the place although longer will be necessary is you want to visit locations further afield. A tour should cost about $5 for the boat but you'll need to bargain. It is an incredibly unique place and amazingly free of tourists. I highly recommend a visit, and the sooner the better; In 10 years time this place will have a hostel and the whole place will be crawling with smelly backpackers in their early 20s. Apparently there is no accommodation in the community at this point as the lodging mentioned in the Lonely Planet was destroyed in a storm. This is not the sort of place you'd want to stay over night in anyway as there is a very active contraband market due to the proximity to the Colombian border and that brings all kinds of colourful characters.
