Stupendous with Six Million Bricks

It’s a remarkable architectural achievement dating from the first half of the twentieth century. Named to honour the renowned polymath, philosopher and educator it sits amongst a residential area. Extraordinarily it is constructed with six million bricks, one for practically every Danish person today. With an interior that is unadorned with overly artistic works, it is a serene and meditative space. We had it almost to ourselves, which highlighted the tranquil nature.

    Gorgeous! Worth the bike ride.
Wow! I had read about this church and was drawn to visit by the photos. I rode my bike from the center city to the church; this was a fairly lengthy bike ride, but do-able. A small warning: the entire journey from the center city to the church is a steady incline, so you will feel it! But, the ride back is lots of fun. The church is in the center of a square and surrounded by small homes that are architecturally unified with the church. It makes for a great, peaceful walk around the area and beautiful photography. I visited on a Saturday morning. This was an ideal time to go for photography; the church was very quiet during my visit, and I was able to capture several photos with no one in them. And I took a lot of photos, because the exterior and, in particular, the interior of the church are absolutely stunning. In typical Danish fashion, the interior is relatively unadorned; the beauty of the architecture speaks for itself. The space is light-filled, tall, and very peaceful. It was fun to take it in from all angles; I ended-up spending longer exploring the interior than I thought I would. At the entrance there is a small table with brochures, postcards, etc. that you are able to buy for a small fee (dropping the fee in a box). The brochures were very informative, telling you about the architect and the construction process. Definitely worth your time while in this beautiful city. Shortly outside of the little residential compound in which the church is located is a nice cafe that's a great spot to grab a coffee before you return to the city.

    Copenhagen's most well known church
The Grundtvig Church is a stunning piece of architecture but is also great to visit if you want to experience peace and tranquility. it's in the Bispebjerg district, in the north of Copenhagen. You can get there on bus 26 from the city centre - it would be quite a long journey on foot. You can't enter during church services (unless you want to participate of course) but otherwise admission is free. Apparently it was constructed from 15 million yellow bricks and it has 2 organs. The interior exudes a cathedral-like calm. Well worth heading out to if you have the time.
