The largest library in the Nordic countries
The Royal Library in Copenhagen is the national library of Denmark and the university library of the University of Copenhagen. It is among the largest libraries in the world. The library was founded in 1648 by King Frederik III, who contributed a comprehensive collection of European works. The library is located in two buildings. It was interesting to see how seamlessly a modern building is attached to an old one. Three bridges connect the new building with the old part. The old building was built in 1906. The impressive central hall is a copy of Charlemagne's Palace chapel in the Aachen Cathedral. A new building known as the Black Diamond was completed in 1999 adjacent to the old one. This building is named for its exterior of black marble and glass. The exterior wall of the stunning atrium is made of glass. While using the escalator, you have panoramic sea views.

My favourite place to hang out in Copenhagen
This stunning 1999 riverside extension to Copenhagen's Royal Danish Library, with its facade of polished black granite, is hard to miss as you walk along the river. It is even more impressive inside: a series of glass windows give it a cathedral-like atmosphere. It is connected to the original reading room and 1906 library building by a walkway. Apart from enjoying the architecture, there is an excellent riverside cafe where you can just sit and watch the world go by while enjoying a tea, soft drink, snack or more substantial meal. The atmosphere is relaxed and relaxing: it's open till 8pm so you aren't hassled to move on. I love Copenhagen and if I just want to sit with a refreshing drink, this is where I come.
