Assistens Cemetery, Zealand, Denmark

4.5 (634 reviews) Spent Ranking #19 in Copenhagen Cemeteries

Green spot

If you want to experience other than the obligatory walk through the pedestrian street or just need a break then visit one of Copenhagen's many beautiful natural areas for example this cemetery. Hans Christian Andersen is buried here, as well as Niels Bohr and Soren Kirkegaard. There are signs directing you to the graves of famous people. Go for a different nature walks, a botanical triptaround the world where you can experience a selection of different types of wood and plants from countries around the World. The cemetery now contains both a park area, a museum section and a functioning cemetery. Copenhageners use it as a park, people come here for walking, jogging, picnicking, and in warm weather you can even sunbathe. It is obviously an integral part of the neighborhood, more like a garden than a cemetery really.

    Great place for a walk
Most of the older cemeteries in Denmark are treated more like parks. It is common to walk around them and some even haven picnics in the green spaces. This particular cemetery is quite nice to walk around and has some famous Danes buried here including Hans Christian Andersen of Little Mermaid fame and the Danish philosopher Soren Kirkegaard.

Green ocean of rest outside of CPH center
A somewhat strange combination of a park and a cemetery. Both a hangout spot for a picnic or a historic site. Entry is free. Weird combination overall but I enjoyed the atmosphere and tranquility, away from the bustling of Copenhagen. Don't go out of your way to come here if you only have a short stay in CPH, but definitely worth a visit should you have more time.
