So many new creative exhibits and demos!

In today's world of evolving traditions and cultural fusion, Mexico's ethnic clothing is much admired for what it tells us about this fascinating country and its diverse communities. Situated in the center of Valladolid, the Museo de Ropa Étnica de México--MUREM--is a nonprofit organization that connects us with the rich and varied cultures of Mexico through the indigenous, traditional, and contemporary ethnic costumes on view. We also have a research library on themes relating to ethnic communities in MesoAmerica, especially Mayan Culture (by appointment only), and offer educational connections to area embroiderers and weavers.

Mexican Traditional Clothing—Definitely Worth a Visit
A friend and I spent more than 1 1/2 hours today on an excellent guided tour led by “Felipe.” (If you are pressed for time, you should alert them up front of your time constraints.) He was extremely knowledgeable and committed to showing us the beauty and variety of Mexican traditional dress. This place is an undervalued gem. We were able to access it easily by walking from our hotel on the central plaza. By the way, Felipe gave the tour in Spanish, at our request, but he appears to speak very good English. There is no entrance fee, but you are asked to make a contribution to the non-profit that runs the museum.

    Educational and fun experience
We thought we would just walk around the museum and were pleasantly surprised that we received a tour instead. Felipe was great, he was very knowledgeable and shared lots of interesting information about how different aspects of the clothing have evolved (down to the generation) and how/why clothing differs between regions. He would always leave time for questions between each display and would quiz us when he referenced info that he already shared, which was a nice touch. We really enjoyed the tour and bought a book on Yucatan embroidery from the small gift shop to learn more!
