Awesome Staff!
This is an awesome museum that is a short uber ride away from the Centro. There are ton of artifacts to see and we were glad that we went to check this place out before seeing all of the mayan temples in the surrounding area. This five star review is particularly motivated by Hugo, the helpful curator, who gave us a 20 minute personalized talk about Uxmal and Chichen Itza after we asked him if they had particular sections about those places. He was so knowledgeable and very kind to share his time with us.

Brilliant and engaging museum.
We visited here in December, and spent an entertaining two hours viewing the excellent exhibitions. We got there on a collective van, picked up just round the corner from the main square - fare was 8 pesos each - and we waved down a return van from the layby outside the museum. The museum exhibits were excellent, with sufficient information in English, but more in Spanish if you can speak it or have patience and a dictionary. We certainly left better informed than when we arrived!

Excellent cutural museum, but fewer actual artefacts
If you're expecting a musuem stuffed with statues, stelae and trinkets from around the Mayan world, you'll be a bit disappointed. The museum is heavy on description and a bit light on some of the artefacts. That said, it's well worth a visit and the 150 peso entry fee. Also don't be fooled by the gigantic, modern building. There are really only 2 galleries to visit, both on the same level. One gallery when I visited housed a temporary exhibit on bicycles and how they contirubted to the development of the Yucatan and are the future, too. It was rather odd. The main gallery is large, and there is a serpentine trail leading through the exhibits. Again, it's a bit different as the path starts by discussing how modern Maya have been assimilated (or not) into society, and then works backward through history. The final exhibits are more the archaeological finds. It's a good history, and there are wonderful signs in Spanish and English throughout, along with a lot of videos, photos and drawings. It's certainly not the grandest museum in Mexico, but if you have a couple hours in Merida and an interest in Mayan culture, worth the time.
