Great/ Geil/ Génial Cenote

No advertising here, but this place deserves a good comment :) This location has everything, good facilities, no crowds, and super cheap. Zip line, kayak, swim in cenote (all equipment new and good quality), toilets, dressing rooms. We visited the place during the week and we were practically the only visitors of the place that costs 200 pesos (10 USD) per person, similar cenotes are around 35 USD! A nice surprise was a family of monkeys stopped to rest just next to us. Bring water since is quite hot, and keep yourself cool by getting into the cenotes (water temperature is perfect) A nearby restaurant was still under construction, so take a big breakfast to enjoy the place since no food is offered inside.

    Nice side trip
Great little side trip while driving between Campeche and Xpujil. I don't know that a trip here would be worth it unless you happen to be driving through the area. The closest major city is Campeche, which is roughly two hours away. That said, I'm sure you could make a day trip of this if you wanted to do the kayak, the zipline, and spend some serious time swimming in the cenote. For us, a 30-45 minute stop was sufficient. Reasons to visit: -You're driving between Campeche and Xpujil and need a break along the 4 hr drive. This cenote is roughly at the half way point. -You want to experience a cenote but are somewhat claustrophobic and the thought of swimming in an underground lake is terrifying. This cenote is huge and open air. It's so large that they actually set up a zip line over it. -I've visited multiple cenotes throughout the Yucatan, and this is among the prettiest simply because of all of the greenery surrounding it -There's not much going on in this part of the state. Your visit helps sustain the local economy. Reasons not to visit: -You have mobility issues. You have to take a series of stairs from the entrance down to the water's edge. I don't recall seeing a ramp. Tips: -The turnoff that leads to the cenote is well marked along Mexico 180 Champoton-Escarcega. From the turnoff, it's about a 20-30 minute drive to the cenote depending on whether you're coming in from the south (20 min) or north (30min). Once you're ready to leave the site, there's no need to double back the way you came as the road horseshoes around to rejoin Mexico 180. If this all sounds very confusing, just look at a google map. -The road that leads in is a narrow country road riddled with potholes in sections. Take your time and enjoy the scenery. In December it's green and beautiful. -You'll be given the option to do a zipline and kayak combo, or the kayak alone. We didn't have more than an hour for this stop and opted for the latter -The facility has bathrooms, but no food. You can bring your own picnic if you plan to spend more time here. The day we visited there was a woman set up along the road across the street from the entrance selling fruit, tamales, chips, and aguas frescas. If you're coming from the south, you'll drive through a small village that has a couple of shops selling drinks and snacks.

Easy to find, clean, fair price
Agua Azul is only a few minutes walk from El Pato - entrance fee is for both cenotes. You can reach the bottom of Agua Azul but not El Pato. For only 100 pesos you can walk to two cenotes, and use a kayak in one of them. For 50 pesos more you can also do some rappelling and use the zip lines. The water stays warm enough to swim year round in the only cenote you can access. The other one you just view from above and there are reports of bees so climbing down to it is not advisable. The road to the cenotes is paved all the way and well marked - no need for a guide or 4x4. We did it in a small car without problems. You have to dodge pigs, dogs, turkeys while crossing Miguel Colorado's small village but that is part of the adventure. Water is not very clear (at the time of our visit anyway) but it was pleasant nevertheless. These cannot compare to the much larger cenote systems in the Yucatan but they are remote and very quiet. We were the only ones there for 30 minutes before a few more people showed up. We didn't try the zip line but they looked very well put together and safe - something we always check before using when we do.
