Turpan Museum, Xinjiang Uygur, China

All about the ruins and more

Though the mummy hall was under renovation and I was thus very disappointed, it was still quite an educational visit in 2 hours. There is so much information about the two ruins, Jiaohe (Yar City) and Gaochang (Qocho City), that was way more than at the ruins themselves, so I also recommend learning about them at the museum first before visiting the actual ruins, just to enhance your onsite experience. We also learned more about different animals living in he area from 20 some millions years ago. It was pretty cool!

One of the best museums in XinJiang
The museum is divided into three main sections - Culture & History, Dinosaurs & Mummies. All of them are not very large but very impressive with artefacts extremely well preserved due to the favourable weather in the region. Surprisingly, entrance is free unlike everything else in China. I have been told this museum is probably the second best in Xinjiang (first being the one in Urumqi). It's well worth the visit.

Surprising good museum, not too big
We spent over an hour at this excellent museum. Unlike most sites in Xinjiang and China, in general, the English explanations were clear and grammatically correct. Others have already raved about the amazing mummy collection, but the most surprising item to us was a 1500 year old dumping and some extremely aged cheese. And it's free--a pleasant surprise.
