Fantastic mountains and not too commercialised. Go off the beaten track and find a yurt to stay in far from the madding karaoke crowd.

Pretty, refreshing, not so spectacular
An hour drive south of Urumqi, pay 30 yuan for a ticket, park the car, hop on a large golf cart for 3km uphill along the vally to the end of the road where a very nice waterfall is just in front of you. A pleasant walk down takes less than an hour, horses, goats and some prey birds above make this stroll particularly pleasant. There is very little grassland to explore even though as the valley expands as you go down more open space and more wildlife (yet quite limited) can be seen. Dirty toilets are available along the road as as in the parking area, and many yurts serve very good local food, a bit pricey, tasty and clean. It is a fine day trip, not necessarily breathtaking, quite nice and enjoyable if you don't keep your expectations too high.
