Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Wyoming, United States

5.0 (5.137 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Yellowstone National Park Canyons

Go early or late to avoid the significant crowds

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River is not as humongously large as the famed Grand Canyon in Arizona. Nevertheless it is a magnificent sight! Best viewed early in the morning (say before 10 am) or late in the day (say after 5 pm) to avoid the enormous crowds which are visiting Artist Point or the observation points on the North rim drive. The views from Artist Point are very good indeed.

A Deserving Rival To Arizona's and Kauai's Canyons!
I was struck by just how the geology here creates some of the most interesting scenery in Yellowstone NP. From the falls to the hoo doos there is so much color here. Our experience began on the north side of the canyon where there are fewer visitors. A switchback trail takes one down around 600 feet to catch a view of the falls. You do need to remember though that, at 8000ft in elevation, the climb back up should be done slowly to respect the lower oxygen levels (unless, of course, you're acclimatized to these altitudes). While the number of visitors on this side of the canyon are fewer I'd still recommend getting here early in the day if for no other reason than to catch the morning light on the water. During our visit the skies were starting to fill up with the haze from the forest fires in Oregon and California which created an almost otherworldly color palette to photograph.

Visit around noon if you want good pictures
So beautiful! Yellowstone has so much to offer and this spot did not disappoint. We came in the late afternoon around 4pm. It was still beautiful but the afternoon low light did not make for great photos. I would recommend coming here midday when the sun is high so you can see Yellowstone's namesake...the yellow rock walls of the canyon.
