Creative get-away!

The mission statement of Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts is to provide educational experiences in visual, performing, and literary arts for adults and children; cultivate the creativity that thrives in our rural community; rehabilitate and preserve our historic buildings and rustic campus. From modest beginnings with only a youth after-school program and a handful of weekend workshop events in 2004 we’ve grown into a national art center attracting students from across the country to our adult workshops, a robust summer children’s program, and a host of annual special events. Additional features include guest lodging, site and custom retreat rentals, and Alley Stage, our outdoor theater venue.

    Eat and watch. Fun!
I attended A Picnic & A Play -- the reading of Brendon Smith's provocative play, Step Two. The readers were wonderful and professional. The play was terrific and the short talkback afterword very intelligent and thoughtful, with numerous people participating. I was grateful for a good sound system so I didn't have to strain to hear. My companion and I ordered the lunch in advance and enjoyed it, especially the salad and cherry pie. The reading was outdoors, which would be perfect in pleasant weather, but that day the weather was awful: muggy and hot. It was a tribute to the artists that only one person left during the performance, given how disagreeable the weather was. Everyone else stayed through the play and the talkback. Apparently future summer programs may be indoors in AC, depending on Covid restrictions.

Love Taking Classes at Shake Rag Alley
This community is one of Wisconsin's many gems when it comes to art classes in all mediums. Mineral Point is a lovely town that hasn't succumbed to the commercialism I see in so many other areas. The classes are generally top-notch and reasonably priced. It's an especially nice treat when I can actually stay at one of the rooms in Shake Rag Alley, rather than at a commercial motel.
