Kenosha History Center, Wisconsin, United States

4.5 (61 reviews) Thursday: 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM Spent Ranking #6 in Kenosha History Museums

Great autos inside plus a lighthouse!

PROS: Free; ample parking; right by lake Michigan and the beach; has 2 lighthouses in close proximity with each other; kind docent ; small exhibit about the early days of Kenosha and a great exhibit featuring the Rambler and AMC car company; there are also an old time fire truck and bicycles ( the ones with the giant front wheel). It’s a relaxing 1 hour stop. CONS: We wished the lighthouse opened earlier in the year (we’re missing it by 2 weeks), otherwise it’s a great little museum.

    Kenosha's hidden gem
The Kenosha History Center is a great example of how entertaining it can be to see what live used to be like, especially where you live so you can compare the changes. That it is free, with easily accessible parking and located on the harbor makes it all even better. Granted it is not on the trolley loop like the other three museums, but it is only a short distance from them. I've lived in Kenosha for over three years now and finally visited the Kenosha History Center with my wife and another couple. The exhibits of a blacksmith, pharmacy, school, barber shop and dentist office are filled with dated artifacts. I took great pleasure just in looking at the maps of the town of Kenosha and Kenosha county. The town has really changed! If you're not from here almost all the north/south streets are "Avenues" and almost all the east/west streets are "Streets." But it hasn't always been that way. The Pike River followed a substantially different course as well. You will learn a lot here if you give yourself time to investigate. My friend is going back again just to spend more time looking at the auto display (which is the largest part of the Center).

    Weekend getaway
Very nice and it's free. My husband liked the Nash auto displays and I liked all the different sections like the old time school display and the dentist office& barber shop etc. Very impressive.
