4.5 (30 reviews) Tuesday: Spent Ranking #4 in Westford Ranches

Wonderful way to spend a beautiful day!

Fun time yesterday! Went on a trail ride. They found the perfect horse for me. Even took a picture of me that I requested. Big, open space with cats, dogs, goats! Serene area. Restrooms. Leave personal items in your car or wear a flat, small pouch or bag. Trail is a good hour. Get there 20 min early for sign in, etc. The trail is varied - some puddles, small hills, lots of greenery. They had two staff members riding both in front of and behind us. Wonderful to be out in such beautiful weather. Staff knows all horses well. Fun to hear the history of horse you are riding. Would definitely go again!

    Amazing memories made!
I’m going to start by saying how appalling the negative reviews are! The animals at this ranch are treated like family instead of employees. The “manager” that answers the phone is Bobby himself. He is an absolute doll. He is a little bit hard of hearing, so he tends to raise his voice to compensate. If he seems rude as a result, imagine how frustrating it is when you can’t hear the person you’re talking to very well. To talk to him in person is a pleasure. He is a joy. I have gone there for over 30 years. The guides are absolutely knowledgeable and may have to bark an instruction so to speak while out on the trail to prevent a potentially dangerous situation. They are not being rude. They are typically one in front and one in back and speak from a distance. The horses are gentle and well trained. That being said, they do still have minds of their own. They may try to go slightly to the side to try to eat or drink. It is up to the rider to pull on the reins and get them back on track. They are animals not machines. They may slow down and lag. You have to give them a kick to the side gently. This is not mean. It’s how the horse knows what you want. The horses will not be directed to trot especially if there are beginners on the ride. If the rider is not experienced, they will not know how to control the horses thus creating an unsafe ride. They assume for safety that all riders are inexperienced. They want you to enjoy the ride not get hurt. My first ride there was on a horse Denty. He was the sweetest most gentle love of a horse. My second ride I got him again. He wanted to do more than walk and walked slightly off the trail and picked up a little bit of speed and jumped over a rock not a big one, but he saw it next to the trail. I was slightly spooked at first and the guide told me not to worry he’s not running off he wants to jump the rock and he did then walked back into line. That’s the best ride I had because I really learned how well he was trained. They could literally walk the trail blindfolded.

very pleasant one hour group trail rides
The guides are nice and the horses are very gentle. They seem to use the same trail through the woods again and again, so the horses know where to go without needing any guidance. Because you're in the woods most of the time, there aren't any great vistas, but it's still a pleasant ride, especially this close to Boston. They seem to be able to accommodate requests for rides on relatively short notice, at least during the summer. The prices are very reasonable. I wish I'd known about this place years ago.
