Annapurna Butterfly Museum, Western Region, Nepal

4.5 (44 reviews) Spent Ranking #16 in Western Region Speciality Museums

I went here with bad reviews in my head.

BUT......I was pleasantly surprised. The grounds. .....unkempt, the building. ....not kept up, the cabinets, .....19th century. .... The collection of butterflies, moths(sp) insects and bugs was fantastic. If you are a nerd and a science freak, then by all means go there. We spent an hour, but I am going back.

    Best butterfly collection in world
Hidden on a campus. Free museum with a whole room dedicated to butterflies. Why? If you ever come to Nepal you will see more species than you can think possible. But it's not just the butterflies. The displays in the museum are very well thought out. Making what could be boring displays of dead critters, really interesting. Worth a 45 min walk from the lakeside or a bus.

    Butterflies Exhibit Extrodinaire
The Annapurna Butterfly Museum is located outside the city and as we were walking it took us some time to find it. The museum is located in the grounds of the local university - the Prithivi Narayan Campus. Once at the museum, you can spend the better part of a day looking at different types of butterflies, insects and other arthropods found in Nepal. The collection has been systematically arranged in display drawers that can be explored by visitors. Hats off to Mr Colin Smith (aka Mr Butterfly and Butterfly Baje in Nepali) who dedicated his life to collect and preserve these butterflies.
