Wilderness Lagoon, Western Cape, South Africa

Shallow lagoon between Touw river and ocean
The Touw river lagoon at Wilderness is separated from the ocean by a barrier peninsula. Due to its open connection with the ocean the water is brackish (slightly salty), though this depends also on the waterlevels in the river. There is an abundance of fish (often unique species adapted to the estuary milieu). Birdlife is also interesting to observe. There is a boardwalk along part of the lagoon used by hikers, but also fishermen. During my stay the water levels in the estuary were low and you could wade across. Overall the lagoon area is a quiet and peaceful area. Great to enjoy nature.

Wilderness Lagoon
One of the must see places when you are in Wilderness. There are a lot of B&B's and guest houses next to the lagoon and some places offer boat trips that go up the lagoon.
