Brilliant Museum - Learn About the Batavia and SS Xantho
The WA Shipwrecks Museum is recognised as the foremost maritime archaeology museum in the southern hemisphere. The Museum is housed in 1850s-era Commissariat building and has since been restored to its historic glory. Steeped in history, the galleries house hundreds of relics from ships wrecked along WA’s treacherous coastline, including the original timbers from Batavia (wrecked in 1629), the de Vlamingh Dish, and also countless artefacts from the Dutch shipwrecks Zuytdorp, Zeewijk and Vergulde Draeck.

Fascinating Place
This museum holds a wealth of interesting information and artefacts from the coastal waters of WA. The most obvious story they tell is of the Dutch vessel Batavia and its infamous voyage to Indonesia. The museum has a sizeable chunk of the hull planking and a number of other bits and pieces from the ship. Added to this is the story of several early Dutch explorers and the ‘Privateer’ William Dampier.

History of WA shipwrecks
Travelled there on the free CAT bus from the railway station. Museum was free but have a donation box for gold coins. Very interesting collection and well written history of all the wrecks off the coast of WA. They do free tours at 10.30am and 2.30pm daily. They have the original timbers of the Batavia and you can look down onto stern of the Batavia and see what life onboard was like from the observation deck.
