Sierra Leone National Museum, Western Area, Sierra Leone

3.5 (38 reviews) Spent Ranking #11 in Freetown Speciality Museums

Nice little museum

Keeping in mind the limited resources available in Freetown, this is a nice stop on your tour of Freetown. Small but has interesting artifact -the front room is filled with 'secret society' costumes (which really are 'secret' so you can't take pictures in there) as well as a blow up of the recently located Bai Bureh photo. There is also a nice display on Bunce Island on the second floor and its connections to the SC/GA Gullahs.

Fantastic artifacts old and new, lovely tour
Located right downtown near City Hall and the Judiciary, this small museum houses a treasure trove of Sierra Leonian history and has revolving art exhibits as well. A small entry fee (maybe Le 20,000 or around $4.50) gets you a tour by a very knowledgeable guide. Everything from warrior masks to photos of the British abdication of the country to artifacts of female circumcision (yes, that is real).

Don't be fooled by the Average rating- GO!
Sierra Leone is a desperately poor country that only got out of a civil war 10 years ago, are suffering through an Ebola epidemic and are still rebuilding. They have more important concerns than museums right now but do visit. The artifacts and pictures are a wonderful window into how the country works. It helps if you know something about their governance structure before going as the importance of the exhibits on culture and the chiefs/paramount chiefs will become more apparent. Nice central location near other worthwhile sites like the Victoria Market, Cotton Tree, etc. I actually visited in 2003 but the ap doesn't have all dates available.
