Interesting Variety of Everything Pertaining to Icelandic Life and Culture

The Akranes Folk Museum is the best place in Akranes to get familiar with it's history. The museum was established and opened in 1959 and is situated on the ancient manor of Gardar. Gardar had a church and a parsonage from the early days of Christianity in Iceland until the last part of the 19th century. Akranes Folk Museum offers a unique insight into past times in Akranes and surrounding area. The museum’s exhibition is in several houses, some of which were moved from other parts of town. The permanent exhibition reflects living conditions and life at sea, in rural areas, at work and in play. In the museum there is also a micro-cinema and a space for temporary exhibitions. An audio guided tour is included in the admission. In the area there is also a lively forge where blacksmiths practice their skills. The forge is sometimes in operation for guests. A visit to Akranes Folk Museum offers something for all senses.

Interesting Variety of Everything Pertaining to Icelandic Life and Culture
This museum is less than an hour north of Reykjavik in a nice little coastal town. The museum itself is a little hard to find and consists of multiple buildings, historic houses and even a ship. There is a lot to see in this museum and we loved it. My favorite thing was the small houses on the property which you can walk through and see them in the decor from long ago to see how people lived under sometimes harsh conditions without modern conveniences. The museum covered many time periods in Icelandic history and covered topics as varied as sports, schooling, maritime, and everyday home life. A very nice young woman who was working there, escorted us throughout the museum and and went out of her way to explain many things to us. We felt like we had a personal guide! This museum is a hidden gem and was an afternoon well spent.

    Good to just look around
The museum centre was pretty interesting. There was an exhibition on Nursing, sports, geology and a general Icelandic history portion. It was good to just walk through and check out. Unfortunately, most of it was only in Icelandic so all I got to see were the actual exhibits without learning much behind them. There is a small cafe which is good for tea and a snack. Overall, I had fun there.
