Old West Lothian link to the Past

Spotted the sign for the library archives and went in to have a browse . Talked to a very knowledgeable librarian who showed me how to access information .with sections for each town and area .Absolutely fascinating .With thousands of old photographs ,pamphlets and newspaper on micro fiche . A godsend for tourists whose kin used to live in the area.Censuses ,Parish registers, international Genealogical index for Scotland and Ireland and much much more . advice would be take a few notes on what you are looking for ......I came across a photo of the shale oil industry in Pumpherston and was amazed at the size of the operation and the refinery that was built there .You need to go with a bit of time to spare as it gets quite absorbing once you start looking through the shelves

Great place to spend a day or two!!
I received plenty of help from staff and volunteers, I was there a few hours and was able to look further into my family history.

An outstanding library, a treasure trove of people and resources
We came to Linlithgow to visit the areas where my forebearers had lived before emigrating to New Zealand in 1859, and found the library to be excellent. I spent time there every day for four days and was most impressed. There were so many resources, books, reports, maps, photographs etc and the librarian, Kirsty, found relevant items very quickly and professionally and answered my queries with interest and enthusiasm . The West Lothian Family History Society volunteers were there too, and the help was outstanding. It is possible to search for names dates etc online from New Zealand, but to visit in person, look at the resources, have conversations, ask questions and get local information about the links between the various communities and parishes, and how the various villages were linked was just amazing. A wonderful treasure trove of resources and people…the people of Linlithgow and West Lothian should be most proud of this Library
