Excellent nature trails

We had a very enjoyable visit. We “hiked” both the Centennial Trail and the trail at the Riverside Recreation Area. We were the only ones on the trails, and we were able to see some very cool animals, including three armadillos and a 6+-inch centipede. My kids loved it. We look forward to returning during the migratory season. Note: do not follow Google Maps directions. They will lead you astray. The directions on the refuge website are truer and better. Note: this site is not near Washita, OK. It is near Butler, OK.

    Scissor-tail. Flycatchers In Abundance!
My wife and I traveled here in March and enjoyed this wonderful place. This NWR is located in west central Oklahoma near the town of Butler. There is no entrance fee but I encourage you to purchase a current Federal Duck Stamp. Any NWR that has an entrance fee will wave the fee if you have the Duck Stamp with you. Washita NWR was established to provide a resting and feeding area for migratory wildfowl. We very much enjoyed the auto tour, hiking trails and the nice visitor/interpretation center. The refuge offers hunting, fishing, observation decks for wildlife viewing and great photographic opportunities. Bring your family (including children), water, binoculars, camera and enjoy what this part of Oklahoma has to offer.

A nice place for a walk to view birdlife
I visited with my wife in late March of 2018. The park was basically deserted of people but abundant bird life was in attendance. The walking trails are well maintained so we enjoyed a long walk and had a picnic lunch on a delightful sunny day. I wish that I lived closer so I could come visit again and again etc.
