History seems accurately portrayed, friendly docents,

This National Historic Site marks the location of the Waiilatpu Mission, a Presbyterian mission ministering to the Cayuse Indians from 1836 to 1847. The mission, a way station for Oregon Trail pioneers, ended tragically with the killing of missionaries by the Cayuse.

The Two Trails are the Highlight
We highly recommend stopping at Whitman Mission if you're in the Walla Walla area. The history of the place, though controversial, is quite complicated and we thought the visitor center did a decent job trying to be fair and balanced to both sides. We didn't think the visitor center had too much to see, though. The highlight of the site is to walk the two 0.5 mi. RT trails around the site. One goes around the old remains of the historic mission buildings. The second goes past the large gravesite and up on top of a nearby hill that provides sweeping views of the area. The Whitman Monument on top of the hill is a great spot to just relax and meditate on the history of this place which played a huge role in American history.

Good place to exercise and burn off any extra calories but....
I have to agree with Deborah B's evaluation of the place. i will also say that they have made efforts to include some part of the native culture. While many of the original foundation is no longer there, it was interesting to see what life was like with settlers (although this was predictable). I wuuld come back again but just for the exercise and burn off any calories and get ready for my first wine tasting after a meal.
