Tacoma Narrows Bridge, Washington, United States

Thankful for two bridges

This bridge used to be a pain to travel across due to high traffic and limited lanes both ways. Since the additional bridge was built in 2007, it has transformed that. The easiest way across is to have the Washington state fast pass (prepaid toll pass) which will help alleviate being stuck paying the toll manually.

    Engineering marvels
We crossed over them several times, but viewed these two stunning examples of human engineering up close from the Tacoma Narrows Park in Gig Harbor, accessed by the address 1502 Lucille Parkway, Gig Harbor. I'm from the east coast, and this is the third time I've been here, as I have family in Gig. Such a sweet park, excellent for kids to run around, a special park, never crowded (at least when I've been there!), affording amazing views of the bridges. We walked the shore, admiring the many stunning examples of driftwood (wow, some incredible tables could be made from the driftwood we saw), all the way to the bridges. You can stand directly under the spans, letting the artsy photographer inside of you to run wild! If you walk super far down from the Narrows Park itself, be sure to check the tide tables though, as the beach is very narrow in spots and you wouldn't want to get stuck! Make sure you've done your "Galloping Gertie" research before you go, in order to truly appreciate the bridges and their significance to the area.

    Impressive Bridges
I still remember going over just The Narrows Bridge. It's impressive to see the two bridges side by side now. With all the increased traffic the other bridge was needed. Still amazing to see the whirlpools below the bridges in the nasty currents of the Narrows. There is a piece of the original "Galloping Gertie" bridge located in the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma with a stunning picture in the background of the destroyed bridge.
