Staircase Rapids Nature Trail, Washington, United States

Serene old-growth forest

This is an easy 2 mile, family friendly shaded trail that winds through an old-growth forest of huge Douglas firs. The Staircase area entrance is in an out of the way location, at the end of a long, gravel road just past Lake Cushman, so it appears to be less congested than other areas of the park. This just adds to its beauty.

    Our Favorite Olympic Hike!
The drive out was beautiful. We saw several waterfalls right by the road. Cushman Lake is also gorgeous. Vault toilets can be found at Bear Gulch Picnic site. Our family hiked out to the suspension bridge and back and it was perfect. Fun trail that runs runs along and across the creek. Fun tree bridge to cross. Great hike for teens or active kids.

Super beautiful hike - and fairly easy
Wonderful hike along the rapids and fairly easy. The trail appears to be very popular and there were lots of cars in the parking lot but the trail did not feel crowded at all! We went on a cloudy day and it was a bit chilly in town, but the forest protected us from the wind and the hike was beautiful. My scaredy cat wife even handled the river crossings over a wood beam bridge bravely! One thing we didn't expect was the five or so miles of "washboard" dirt road to get there. Still worth it! The trails showed our route to be just 2 miles, but my GPS showed we walked 3 miles so plan on that much walking. It is in the Olympic National Park, so if you have a national park pass be sure to bring it - we did.
