Entertaining Mid-Size Zoo

Treat your family to a special day at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. Where else can you see sea lions, hammerhead sharks, red wolves, muskox, penguins, stingrays, and an elephant all in one place? The 29-acre Zoo is large enough to offer an awesome array of animals yet small enough to let you get really close to them. Who knows? You might run into a lynx on your way to see a Sumatran tiger! Be sure to visit Kids' Zone. This fanciful exhibit engages children in active learning through play. The focus is on fun, movement and learning what animals need to thrive. The breathtaking views of Puget Sound, Mount Rainier and the Olympic Mountains are free - and so is the parking. So what are you waiting for? Bring your family to see ours. Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is open at 9 a.m. daily. Closing times vary. Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is just minutes off of I-5 in beautiful Point Defiance Park in Tacoma, WA.

    Entertaining Mid-Size Zoo
As a child, I went to PDZA more times than I can remember. As an adult, the experience is just as fun, although it does feel a tad on the small size. The major selling points for this zoo is the new aquarium (hosting sharks and sea turtles), the red wolf conservation center, and lots of activities for kiddos. PDZA is an ideal family outing, designed for entertainment and education. Even adults, with no kids, can enjoy their stay; however, it may be much shorter in length. Things to be aware of: as of my last visit, PDZA still required reservations and closes early (around 3pm) so arrive early! Arriving early also increases your chance of seeing more animals, as the large mammals tend to go dormant in the early-mid afternoon.

Nice zoo, great for little ones
I first visited this zoo nearly 12 years ago. Sadly, it was not as good as I remember but it was still worth a visit with my family. There was one lonely Asian elephant (for the records there are none at Seattle's zoo), two tigers, many of the birds were not on exhibit due to bird flu quarantine, and the polar bear died earlier this year. Still, there were lemurs, meerkats, a clouded leopard, red wolves, the budgee exhibit, and the aquarium was super cool. Like many places, it is struggling due to the pandemic. However, it is clear they care about the animals and is worthy of support. It is a fairly easy three to five hour visit for families with little ones. Get there early for the best parking, we were there on a Sunday at 9:15 and generously sized parking lots were full when we left around 12:15.
