Owen Beach, Washington, United States

4.5 (86 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #13 in Tacoma Beaches

Very nice views

Nice public area with good parking. Several clean bathrooms here, and you can rent kayaks. My wife and I stopped here on a bike ride along the Ruston Trail. Great views of the water.

Popular with the locals, but lots of parking
Owens is THE go to place for Tacoma locals, kids from 0-99. It is a wonderful pepple beach dotted with driftwood, a great place to go wading, but don't recommend swimming too far out, the current is pretty intense. During the summer months their is a concession stand and kayak and SUP rentals. They are reasonably priced, and if you listen to the guide, and stay in the area, you will have a wonderful paddle (good spot for first timers). You can walk way down the beach, and get away from the crush, or you can bring all friends, and take advantage of one of the 100 picnic tables ( I have never counted, and it may not actually be a 100, but there are a LOT!) You can take walk along the bulk head and visit marina, fine dining, and watch the famous Washington Ferrys take off. Its a great way to spend an hour or a day. You choose. We visit year round.

A Great Place for a Bay Side Stroll
Owen Beach has a walkway that is well maintained, is wide enough for several people to use easily, and has unbeatable marine views. The trailhead is conveniently located in Point Defiance Park, adjacent to the boat launch and around the corner from Anthony's Restaurant. You can go for about a mile or more before confronting boulders along the shore of Commencement Bay that make the trail narrower; but at low tide you can make your way among the boulders, hug the shore and go further along the shore for a superb walking experience. I have seen seals and other sea life in the waters off Owen Beach, and there are always the breathtaking views of Vashon and Maury Islands, the bay itself with boats and ships traversing the water, and interacting with other walkers who love the surroundings.
