Great View of Lake Crescent

We hiked the Storm King Trail after a short hike to Marymere Falls near Crescent Lake. The trail is short, less than 2 miles, but quite steep with switchbacks all the way. As you get near the end, there are some nice views. The maintained portion of the trail ends but there isn't much of a view here. Continue on the unmaintained trail and soon come to a section with fixed ropes. There was a pile of old climbing gloves we used for this part, but you might want to bring some if you don't want to wear dirty gloves. Once up the ropes, its a short climb up some rocks to a fantastic overlook. The views of Lake Crescent are really great. We saw a lot of little birds up here, Canada jays. Please don't feed wildlife as we saw some people doing it. Note this is not the summit of Mount Storm King, not even close.

The Amazing View of Lake Crescent is Worth the Difficult Hike.
This hike/climb is difficult, but so worth the AMAZING view at the summit. But, it's a leg burner and will tax you. When you reach the sign that announces ,"end of maintained trail," keep going along the unimproved trail; it's still a decent trail. In short order you'll come to the climbing ropes which will take you up along sections of trail too steep and worn to climb without slipping. You'll definitely want good hiking boots if you're going to climb the ropes. These ropes will take you to a rocky/boulder area which is just below the summit. It's an easy 20 foot climb up the rocks and onto the summit where you're going to shout...."WOW!" Okay so you have to get down so take your time on the ropes going down because it can get slippery. Also, if you're afraid of heights or really out of shape this might not be the climb for you.

A Hike Not for the Old or Frail
This strenuous hike with a 2,000 feet elevation took us 5 hours. (We are both in our 7th decade and did not see any others less than 30 years younger - and we saw only 10 others). Make sure you have good hiking boots, are not afraid of heights, and are in excellent condition. (Our legs ached for 3 days after - but it was worth it).
