Hikers Dream

We were traveling to the WA coast stopped at the Mt Saint Helens KOA RV park. This was close enough to let us do a 45 min drive to she the wonderful views & hike. Website doesn’t show all the trails that are available to you & which ones are dog friendly. Look at “All Trails” for a better look at what would be best for you. We did the Blast Zone Trail. First part is easy, but the turn off to BZ isn’t easy to locate. It is worth it for views look at pics. 8+ miles if you do it all but you don’t have to. Take water & food, because nothing is available. Visitor center is closed. Careful driving in in early morning because bridges were icy.

A Great Walk on a Blue Sky Day
Be sure to go to the observatory. Nice way to understand the eruption and destruction it caused. Take the hike to devils point if you have the time.

    Fantastic climb and experience
We started our climb from the trailhead, which is paved with plenty of parking. (Climbers bivy to Monitor Ridge route) Quick first couple of miles on pretty flat trail until you reach a clearing where Monitor Ridge start. Easily follow the large white painted poles along the ridge proper or the trail to the left of the ridge. Good scrambling to Monitor station and then a 1000 foot ash field climb (1 step forward, 2 steps back). Start by 7a or earlier. Bring at least 3 liters of water if going to be warm. Chug a gatorade at the trailhead before you go. We did peanut butter and jelly and snacks. 10.5 hours roundtrip with 2 hours of breaks between ride, summit and monitor station. SUPER FUN!!!
