Mount Ellinor, Washington, United States

4.5 (11 reviews) Spent More than 3 hours Ranking #27 in Olympic National Park Mountains

I love the snow

This is an awesome conditioning hike. I have hiked Mount Ellinor in every season, but the most fun is with snow on it

Favorite hike of my trip to the Olympics!
This is a *golden* hike! With forest fire smoke in the air, we weren't sure if it was the best day (8/16/18) for a trip to the top, but we were so glad we hiked it. With kids *ages 8 & 11) in tow, we opted for the upper trailhead to shorten the route just a bit (highly recommended if you have those younger hikers along!) The gravel forest road was an adventure in itself, but we found the trailhead parking with our hiking book's directions. Be sure to research the directions in advance, as there is little signage on the way. As we ascended through the forest trail, we began to anticipate the views from the top. It's one of those hikes that keeps you thinking you must be close to the top. Once you come out of the forest, there is still a long steep way to go that keeps you thinking you must be close to the top at every bend. It is a rigorous hike, but so worth it at the top. The views (even with some wildfire smoke haze) are just outstanding. Snowcapped Mount Olympus was visible along with the Olympic Range. The full 360 includes the Hood Canal and a mountain lake. The way down is much faster! All in all, just one of my favorite lifetime hikes. You really get rewarded for that 3700 feet elevation gain from trailhead to summit!

Late october hike in the snow, no goats
I hiked this trail on late october in the morning. I started at upper trailhead that was quite easy to reach with a map and a SUV. As I parked, the fog and rain were already here. Hike was quite easy but very steep in parts... Also, the stairs part was snowy (so very slippery) and the summit was very snowy (maybe 10 inches of snow) so the trail was unmarked and I searched 2-3 times before taking the good summit trail. FYI you have to take it by the right side. I didn't see any goats unfortunately. At the summit it was snowing quite well. I was the only one on the trail that day which was cool because I hate hiking in crowded trails. As I came back at my car, there was another hiker parking his car and getting ready for this cool adventure.
