What a Unique Situation!

I can see it, I can photograph it; I just can't walk on it! This is a great example of the longest undefended border in the world. Indeed, from the Canadian side, one might almost say "undefined" border. Please have a look at my photos. The one with traffic barrier has the person on the right in the USA, the other two in Canada. In the photo with the obelisk, the people on the right are in Canada, the people on the left are in the USA. How do I know where the border is? Note the vertical line on the monument, which is Survey Monument Number One. To me, simply a one-of-a kind situation.

    Neighbours
We visited Monument Park the other day during our first trip in years to Point Roberts from Cloverdale, BC. We did not try any of the trails, just visited the monument. This site was a contrast to 0 Avenue though the Fraser Valley. There you can drive in a straight line for miles (kilometers), hardly realizing that a few feet (meters) to one side of the road is United States and the road is in Canada. Monument Park is similar, in that the Park is in United States and the houses pressing against the fence are in Canada. This is a great example of good neighbours/neighbors. We noticed that at the end of the road in Canada someone had set up a basketball hoop. I hope they are all good shots, because if they miss the basket they have to go into another country to retrieve the ball.

    US-Canada Border Marker #1
Monument Park, overlooks the Strait of Georgia, and is home to border marker #1 on the US-Canada border. The granite obelisk made in Scotland marks the 49th parallel, and the international border. In 1861 it was placed on the western most part of the longest undefended border in the World. Lattitude 49.0.0 Longitude 123.3.53 There is also a 951' trail down to the beach from this little park. If you are only stopping for the monument, 15-20 minutes is sufficient. If you go down to the beach, spend a few hours... perhaps bring a picnic and go swimming. There are no facilities at this Free attraction. It may seem like a bit of a novelty, but this stop was our favorite on Point Roberts.
