Go at the right time.

My wife and I arrived around 8 a.m. on a Monday morning. We never heard the gun shots. Maybe those are more of a weekend or later in the day phenomenon. We walked the full 2 1/2 mile and only met one woman. It was all ours. Sadly, we were already too late for the Camas (May 9) but there were lots of other great wildflowers. We took a lot of time since we were taking pictures and are getting rather elderly. Just as we came back to the parking lot we heard this real noisy group. I assumed it was a bunch of kids or a family. Nope, it was a group of elderly ladies talking very loud.

    Interesting and Simply Sweet Hike
We hit the Mima Mounds for a short early morning hike. We arrived at the site about 8 am. Because it was early, it was not yet hot although it was a sunny day. We had the mounds all to ourselves. We were a group of 6 newly-retired visitors. We read the information about the mounds in the mound-shaped kiosk before setting out on the shorter loop hike suggested by the one person in our group who had been to the mounds before. We weren't in a hurry or anxious about getting a cardio workout. The hike was fun and relaxing, and we had fun making conjectures about the REAL origin of the mounds as we walked along. I liked the feeling of being semi-hidden as we walked between the mounds. This was a fun FREE activity.

    Great pyramids of the gophers?
A great diversion for an hour in the countryside. If it is on your way, I recommend you stop, stretch your legs, walk a bit, and put your curiosity in gear. If you’re a local, it is worth seeing another geological feature trying and failing to mirror the grandeur of Rainier. Not overly-explained so much is left to the imagination. Nice short trails. There is an honor system for the parking fee; clean restrooms. The gunshots from the driving range could be discomfiting for the sensitive. If you have to go out of your way to get to the mounds and you are not a geologist, you might be better to stay on the road to your original destination, wherever that is.
