First Overlook Sufficient; Entire Loop Great Too
We visited on a beautiful day in early June. The hike up to the first main overlook is only about 0.5 mi (one way). Great views from there and easily reachable by most people if you don't feel like going further. But if you can push onwards, you should hike the full loop up to the summit and then down the forested north side of the butte. Took me only a little over an hour to hike the entire loop (2.5 mi. RT). The most scenic sections are from the first main overlook up to the summit because you have sweeping views most of the way.

Get out of the wheat and into the woods
Yes, we all love those rolling green Palouse hills that stretch on for miles, but what happened to the trees? If you need a tree fix and a nice view of this fascinating area, I would recommend this lovely small county park. There's a 3.5 mile round trip walk that takes you up a moderate grade to a long ridge where you can survey the land. At the base, there are plenty of picnic tables and grassy areas in the trees. Yes, it can get crowded, so come before 10am and you'll have more alone time than at noon. Bonus: there is no park user fee.
