Green Mountain, Washington, United States

A Great, Short Hike

We took a group of kids aged 6 through 11 years old. They all did well & loved it. The mountain is only about 1600' high. At the summit there are picnic tables and a view. If you don't want to hike, you may also drive to the top. There are two trails: Wildcat & Gold Creek. Be prepared to see bicyclists, motorcyclists & horseback riders on the trails. Also, in the spring and fall, be prepared for some muddy areas.

Hard to believe this place exists...
When the Horse Clubs started working on this mountain retreat back in the 70's, a bunch of us from the USS Sacramento enjoyed camping over the weekend when we were Stateside. I've been back a number of times since then, and am very impressed with how they have developed it without losing the wilderness aspects. The facilities are great, with all structures and trails in perfect shape. The views were great, in spite of the clear-cut areas on the North mountain faces. Now it's all been re-claimed by the greenery, and you'd be hard-put to see where they cleared off the landscape. The maps call it an Equestrian Park, and the Equestrian Clubs have done most of the work getting it established. But the mountain itself is available to everybody. The campsites have hitching areas & posts, there are parking areas sized for horse trailers, and such, but it's a beautiful area, and worth a visit, even if you don't have a horsey to ride around. Seriously, though, take a drive up & look around. We always take our cameras and spotting scopes, and have never been disappointed.

    Green Mountain/Gold Mountain Recreational Area
This protected recreational area is very close to Bremerton and affords a hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and even camping option for the family. There are several approaches to the trails, but here are my tips: Green Mountain trail head is just a couple of miles past the Wildcat Lake County Park entrance, which is off of Holly. To get to Holly, take Seabeck Highway from Bremerton. Holly is the street to the left at the new round-about. The trail access is mainly used by mountain bikers and is slippery at the approach, so I recommend you go to the Gold Mountain trail head. There the trail meanders pleasantly across a foot bridge and other scenic venues until you are on the top of the mountain,The easy hike can be done in less than 2 hours with children. There is a great view of Puget Sound and Seattle from the top. To get to Gold Mountain, follow Holly west, until you get to the Gold Creek turn off, turn left. Follow this until you get to the Gold Mountain trail head sign, which will be on your left, where there is a parking lot, and usually some other vehicles. Both the Green Mountain and Gold Mountain parking areas are visible from the road, so you can't miss them. Finding the trail heads are pretty simple after that.
